I also remember reading that the GMC cyclone AWD turbo truck also outperformed the Corvette.

Totally right; I forgot about the Cyclone (S-15 pickup) and the later Typhoon (S-15 Jimmy/Blazer) I worked at a dealer that specialized in GM performance and modified cars. We also got one of the very first 454SS trucks off the line; which sounded much cooler in name than it actually was in real life.

I tend to agree with you. the late-70s through mid-90s was a pretty low period for American muscle cars.
The ZR1 was ahead of it's time.
The Viper was ridiculously powered, but lacked the driveability to be really safe on the road. It might as well of had a live axle as it could never keep traction.

Also notable badsass 80s cars:

1989 Turbo Trans Am
Any GNX and the later model Grand Nationals.

There were 5 or 6 Fieros built by GM with Grand National powerplants. They were FU fast, and handled well; far better than the Corvette. For that reason, they never had VINs put on them, and were never made available to the public as nothing could eclipse the Corvette's performance per the GM board room. Albeit the 1989 Turbo Trans Am did just that; and the marketing materials were detuned as such.

Those Turbo T/A's with the GN engine were wicked.

Yes, those 454 trucks were a let down. I still have my high school hot rod. Fullsize chebby with an LT1 and T56 6-speed. GM should have built those trucks. It's not that fast, but fun to do burnouts in and so unsafe when you are doing 80 it feels like 120, a little shaky. I need to find a picture of it from it's glory days.

Most devistating day of my life:....... 18 yrs old I had a "bad ass" 68 Nova with a 350 all done up with a Transdapt chrome engine kit, Craigars with 60s series, 4 speed and 10bolt with 2:73(or whatever stock was) My friend had a 86 Mustang LX 5.0..........Well.......I lost..........OMG, heartbreaking.

Best thread in years BTW.....

You must understand. Joe is EXTREMELY conscientious with regard to high-fashion apparel.

I think everyone needs to post pics of their first/second car or hot rod pre 2000s, then we can vote on whats the most ridiculous auto.
