Default How to Make an MPG or WMV or AVI file?

Okay I have a Hi 8 MM palm corder thing
I want to video tape my first run ever in my tub
Then I would like to post it up on net for all to see this shiz nizzle start up and run at the marina for all who helped me through this project and kept me going and going and going to share some pride in the completion of this

Now How do I get it onto my computer?

I have a IBM stink pad 933 PIII
windows 2000

Also have access to other computers as well for im a network engineer at master card.
I dont have a video capture card in any of my work machines so do I have to buy a fire wire card or can this be done via USB and a video recording software on the laptop?

Talk to me people, I want you all to see this thing
Thanks
Jason
PS what video editing software would I need?
Adobe or is there something else out there?
thanks much
Jason

What type of cam corder do you have is it digital?
I am not familiar with windows 200 but Windows XP came with
Windows movie Makerits pretty rudimentry but can down load from a digital camera. Check to see if it came with Windows 200.
Adobe Premier has a demo available for a 1 month trial but has a steep learnibng curve.
I have found the easiest and best so far for me is Sonic Foundrys Vegas Video.

Camera is a cannon Hi 8
it is not digital but it has all the digital features and zoom and all that BS
it has a 700X digital zoom
I can see a plane flying over head about 25 thou feet like it is sitting on the runway
(when camera is sitting on something still)
but the book does not get into all the making MPG files and stuff.
says it is possible
I have Adobe premier 6.0 full blown version here at work
is there an adapter I need or something?

I have a special cord for the camera that came with it, has a small 1/8 jack to a sound and video RCA end on it
What do I have to get to get it to record on the computer?

I am pretty sure that you will need a video capture card
The best resource I have found for answers is www.dv.com
you should find answers there

Hi8 is a analog tape format because of that you need a analog capture card. There are also boxes that convert your analog to digital. You can buy a capture card for less than $100.00

Jason-

The problem here is the fact that you have a laptop. In order to capture analog video (Hi-8) from your camera, you will need a video capture card to go into your PCMCIA slot. I'm sure there is one, but a quick search by me did not reveal a PCMCIA type card, only desktop versions. Anyway, some of the more popular video editing software companies provide the card with the software.

Here is a link to some by Pinnacle

As you can see in that link, most are digital, some are analog (like yours) and some have both. The RCA jacks are providing analog video and audio from your camera. If it were a digital output, it would be a Fire-Wire (1394) type cable. Maybe it has both available? Check your manual.

I hope this helps some.

This one was 60 bucks and uses USB
Just ordered it
Will be here tomorrow and my corporate reseller even said that the Adobe is good but a real ***** to learn
this comes with its own software to record the media through the corder and into the USB
http://www.dazzle.com/products/dvc80.html
So now I can use this with the software on any PC or laptop I have
Not bad
Hope this works
thanks my friends for the help
