Question....if a non insured boater, from a state that doesn't require it, hits and injures an insured boater, who pays the bills, and/or why should the insured boater have to pay for someone else's negligence (Judy Judys famous word) and risking their ins rates going up, if not get cancelled? Are you required to carry Ins on your truck in those same states? If so, that makes no sense.

In Florida you can "homestead" your primary residence which is untouchable, then retirement accounts are usually off limits, then joint accts are off limits if the boat was only owned by one party......So if your boat is titled in just the operators name, then the assets are all joint I suspect there will be low chance of a big payday. Factor in a bankruptcy and million dollar judgments would easily get tossed. Note if the judgments were the result of a criminal action (dui etc) then bankruptcy may not discharge the debt.
I think homesteading only covers 250k?

Sure, we have an un insured boaters policy but would be pretty $hitty that our rates go up because of a claim if it were legitimately the other persons fault but they didn't have any insurance. This thread is shocking me more and more. I'm very glad FMO and any poker runs we run in require proof of insurance. I figured average boaters out there were a mix of those with insurance vs those without (based on their states rules of course) but never would have guessed so many people in performance boating don't have a policy. I guess I would have assumed when boat shopping, the price of insurance is a factor the same way gas, maintenance, storage, truck to trailer, etc is on whether or not it is affordable.
no offense taken. Yeah everyone on a race course signs a Liablity release, and they are going in the same direction. But you have to tow to the event !! Bottom line.. If you think you need insurance to safley operate a boat for your protection and others then maybe you should not have a boat in the first place. I have had boats all my life ( since 11 years old) and I pay attention to details. Yes there have been close calls but I stil pay attention.. I think paying attention so the accident does not occure in the first place is the best insurance possible..

Yeah I am taking a wrisk, but it is a wrisk just like racing.. And you can't insure raceboats. And I dont drink and do stupid chit anymore. I could pay the insurance and let it sit in front of my house .Then who wins? Or use that money to boat about 30 hours a year..

Thank God I believe in The Good Lord. I wouldn't have the thing in the first place if I did not believe. If something bad happens to me, I deserve it, and i will have to deal with it and pay my dues. BTW The Good Lord is the boss of everything
How can you think only about yourself ? If you don't have money to insure your boat how would you have money to fix someones boat if you're at fault in a collision ?

I think with your mentality and attitude, it's you who shouldn't have a boat. A lot of us have boated our whole lives but None of us are invincible, no matter how much common sense or experience we have. To say that people who feel they need insurance shouldn't have a boat is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

It is nearly insane the amount of people who obviously run around with no insurance. I know personally how bad it can be and had insurance that just happened to deny my claim. Loosing your boat is one thing being responsible for someone possibly loosing there life no matter how freakish an accident it may be is another. The biggest reason to have insurance is not to replace your boat it is to protect the rest of your life.....

X2 I am in the insurance buisness and you wouldn't believe how many poeple do not have insurance on their boats. I have heard every excuse in the book on why they don't have it. It cost to much, my boats a old piece of junk, insurance is a scam, none of my friends would sue me, etc....... I can see if people do not want to pay for the the actual value of your boats with full coverage, but do the rest of your fellow boaters a favor and at least put liability on them to protect other peoples property and lives.

Holy Hell. Please tell me you are kidding.

You are behind on your house payments but you still are supporting a boat? Ask the good lord for some common sense. Then ask the good lord for forgivness after you ruin someone else's life and have no insurance to help them out.

Then ask for some spelling lessons.
