I hope those are some bad ass valve covers, because you will have about $725 in them. $300 for the covers, $150 in breathers (that sell for $58 ea on CP's website), $175 to bolt the breathers to the covers, and $100 in valve cover gaskets (when the GM gaskets are the best that money can buy at about $40 ea).
All I can say is WOW!!!
I can see where the bill would have gone up quite a bit with the addition of the ignition, carb, Procharger hat and plumbing, P/S bracket, etc. Also, there were a bunch of parts that were upgraded to handle the increased power of the Procharger, I'm assuming. Now, I don't know what you guys talked about prior to that. You said that the engine was supposed to be built to handle the blower from the start. Did he not talk to you about upgrading the parts? Did he just do that on his own? He changed the bearings to coated ones, changed the pistons, etc. I agree with everyone else that the vast majority of the prices are insane. The one that really stood out to me, beside the hold down clamp, was the Comp 929 valve springs for $338.40. Those springs are less than $200 any day,any where.

Alive and well and just got back home! Was able to pick up the engine from the builder with no hassle, still have to go get the boat back yet though. The truth has definitely come out though as I paid a $5,000 deposit as requested to get the engine build going but only $4,000 of that made it to the builder. The final price with machining, parts, assembly and dyno was at $2,700 less than what the "middleman" was trying to get me for having not actually done any work to deserve it other than take $1,000 of my deposit. The engine is already in good hands at another shop awaiting the boat on Sunday. From what I can tell the builder made the invoice listing his list price and actual price charged, which seemed pretty fair. The mechanic simply made his invoice to me to reflect full list price on all parts instead.

I know it sucks, why do people think that charging for every single nut&bolt makes them money, wheres the orig dist hold down, orig valve covers, carb, etc. I know a lot of things could be reused atleast accesorie wise, and what I hate is the promise to have it done by a certain date, then finishing it the next year that really makes me mad, not only do we over pay, we get to pay payments and insurance for that summer while our engine sits at the shop. ive learned get it in writing, and warranty that's a whole different deal!!!!!

It came out to be just over 13K when we settled on it, just glad to finally have it back as I haven't seen it in over a year now! Seemed like a pretty fair price for all the work done, there were a few spacers and pulleys they also fabricated in house to make all the accessories fit properly with the charger and we also swapped from serpentine to v-belts so they got everything set up for that too. All in all I'm pretty happy with it, now to go get the boat back and take it to the other shop where the engine is...

Considering all you've been thru and if that motor holds up (which remains to be seen with all motors) you payed a fair price in my opinion.
Move on and be happy and give us and update every chance you get.
Thank you for this thread. You are my hero for having the courage to do what you did and stop another bad business man from taking advantage of someone with a dream and passion in boating.
