Miami Boat Show 2014 Request

I hope I'm posting in the right location. If not, please move this post admins.

I recently contacted DCB boats and they recommended I post in this forum to get the word/idea out.

Offshore community:

I'm emailing you about potentially setting up for the weekend of the Miami Boat Show in February. I am flying down with my father, couple of his friends, and my brothers to attend the show for the first time but not for a good reason.

My father (Clyde N. Grey), age 58 has been a longtime Baja boat owner. He purchased a Baja Force in 1989 brand new (See attached images), we still have it to date with over 600 hours logged, and it still runs great without any issues. My father was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma last year and has recently learned that the melanoma has metastasized to his lungs, spine, stomach, tongue, and brain. Currently, he is on radiation and a clinical drug to help with pain and to reduce the size of one of the tumors. If this last clinical treatment does not work, they have given him approximately six months to live. He has tried multiple experimental treatment programs with no success and has had to give up his portion of his architecture firm that he started in 1993 due to the inability to work. I have purchased the boat from him to help pay for his medical bills and radiation treatments. He always intended on handing the boat down to us kids and he didn't want to do it but, I was more than willing to purchase the boat knowing it will help him with the bills and to keep the boat within the family.

Growing up, he always told my siblings and I that when he retires that he was going to purchase a much larger and faster boat. He always talked about moving and retiring to Lake Winnipesaukee in NH (where we went every summer growing up), buying a small house on the water, and having a speed boat larger than the house (i.e. no kids around. Haha). However, it looks like he will not be able to do that.

The reason I am posting here is to see if we can set something while we down in Miami for the boat show such as an extended afternoon/day in a larger off-shore performance boat. One of his bucket list items was to go to the Miami boat show at least once in his life and like I mentioned previously, we will be flying(or driving depending on the price of tickets) down from MA to attend the boat show. I would love to be able to do something special for him while we are down there. He is still very well with us and although the cancer has spread throughout the body, he has not weakened much yet. We all know the worst is yet to come but want to be able to do this while he still can.

If you think something like this might be able to be setup with either you or if you know a marina that would be interested in helping out, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I’d love to surprise him with something like this and would be willing to pay for it if came down to it.

This is the web page I have set up for him. It should give you an idea of the support he has received and a tracking log of updates regarding his condition. I can also provided a more detailed summary of who he is and how he has selflessly provided for our family and others over the years.

Sorry to hear man. I lost both grandfathers last year to cancer. Pulling for you. If I had a boat on that coast is gladly help but I don't. Hope you find it and have a blast.

Orthobam 01-09-2014 07:59 AM

Someone step up and do this. I would contact MTI. They have the most boats (and owners) at the show. I would do this in a heartbeat if I was going.

My dad lived exactly 3 months after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 11'. I knew it was a death sentence when we found out. I asked him if he had any bucket list items. He said he had always wanted a new red Corvette. 2 days later I got him one. It was a memory I'll have forever.

Get a hold of Larry Goldman, Xtreme Marine: http://xtremepowerboats.com/aboutUs.php

He got the Kardashian's on a boat so he would be the guy to contact in Miami!

EPKRC 01-09-2014 11:04 AM

CGRIZZLE,

We will not have our "go fast" down there for the show but will have our 70' Hatteras S/F moored at the South Beach Marina during the show. We will be entertaining on board i.e. fishing, cocktail cruises, etc. and would be more than happy to extend some Texas hospitality to you and your father. Give me a call 800 759-2628 Ken

I'll see what I can do to get you're dad out riding….
At minimum, we will have our MTI-V with quad OBs in the Mercury show slips for demos… We can get him out on a ride, even though the demo trips are usually not very long…

Yes, Goldman may have a performance boat charter available...

Get a hold of Marc or Scotty (miss geico racing), maybe you could get him a tour of the Geico race shop and boat. First class guys and first class operation that would be a treat to see.

My thoughts and prayers to you and your family

All the best to your family. I've lost close family to that nasty disease, it's no fun at all. So cool to see this community stepping up already. We will be in Miami for the show (sans boat, or you'd have a ride!) Maybe we will see you down there. :drink:

314joey 01-09-2014 03:54 PM

Prayers for your Father and Family, cancer sucks, lost one parent directly and one indirectly, my Mother hung on with lung cancer for almost a year, not pretty, we're not going to Miami for the show, we live on the Gulf and if you're even close to Ft. Myers we would be thrilled to take you guys out for the whole day, give me a yell if this works for you, you're doing the right thing, time is precious, live life, good luck.

CGRIZZLE 01-10-2014 06:25 AM

---In general, thanks for all the responses. I had a feeling that posting here was the right thing to do. I've always been a big forum person (not for boats), mainly cars but, forum communities are usually composed of great people. Thanks again.

That's exactly what I'm shooting for. I want to give him a memory that my brothers, him, and I can hold on to. He's extremely depressed knowing that death is so close and I'm sure it is a feeling that's hard to grasp from anyone but the person going through it. I know this trip will definitely help take his mind off it at least for the time being. One thing I do know is that boating is a true passion of his and the is content with just being on the water no matter where he is. Although he can't be right now because our lake is frozen over and it is 0 degrees out. haha

I'm sure the Katrashians can't be the only people he has got on a boat. I wonder if he is ok with knowing that what he is known for and not someone else.
I'll make sure to contact Larry though. Thanks,

Imagine getting stuck with Goldman AND The Kardashian's?!!

sy goldberg 01-10-2014 10:10 AM

The last time I saw Larry he was putting a name and hailing port in gold leaf on a Kardashian butt.

WildThing47 01-10-2014 10:59 AM

We'd be willing to do something. Give me a call.

Thoughts and prayers go out to you my friend.

CGRIZZLE 01-10-2014 06:43 PM

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel with views to stay at in Miami? There's total of seven of us going down and we want to try and get a suite of some sort. I'm researching hotels and have a good idea but I figured I would check here as well. Fortune House Hotel looks promising.

Tom A. 01-10-2014 07:52 PM

I will not be there for the boat show but I will be there the Wednesday after (afternoon) to do the Poker Run on Thursday.

If you guys are still down on Wednesday, I would be more than happy to take you and your father out for a ride.

ChrisK 01-10-2014 08:25 PM

What are your travel dates? Another member and I will have his boat down there and I can ask him if he wouldn't mind taking a fellow Baja owner out for a ride... His is a 36 Baja.

I am not a local, but this place is a good deal http://www.fortunehousehotel.com/

got one of the penthouse condos that could sleep 6 for less than 300 a night last summer, edit, prices are up from last summer 389 a night

Just a heads up......

A. February, Miami boat show week is probably the most expensive week of the year (summer is slow season)
B. You could spend $100-200 a day in cabs getting 7 people to/from the show/south beach

They show 399 a night for a two bed condo, bay view 14th through 16th, just about made up my mind to come and see what all the fuss is about

B rent a suburban, off airport or (God forgive me) a Kia Mini van, which I hate to say is a better vehicle than a Dodge Caraven

B. Parking will be $35 a day+ at the hotel and $25-50 at the show on top of the $100+ for the rental

Had to look it up, they did not charge me to park, but I did valet, less than 35, think it was 25, still cant beat the price in that part of town for that much room I think.

room rate was + taxes .

Loved the location and the view over Dodge Island and Government cut

boating37 01-11-2014 12:43 AM

Just wanted to say I'm sorry to here what your going threw, it's not easy. I just lost my dad and step-dad from Cancer this past oct, within 3 weeks apart. And my dad wanted to go out on my MTI , he's never been on a cat before. I was not able to take him for, that ride. But if I can help you out and take you and your dad for a ride I would love to. The only thing is that I will not have the boat down to Miami until Feb 19th, for the Poker Run. But if your driving down to the boat show, stop off in Tampa on the way down and we can make it happen.

Crude Intentions 01-11-2014 12:51 AM

This is what's its about. Fountain vs cig is fun but has no true bearing on life. People get butthurt over stupid things. When it boils down to it the Oso and powerboating community is a strong one. Willing to help one another. Glad to see it and hope someone's schedule works out to help out. I would if I could.

Hats off to all trying and willing to help out.

ChrisK 01-11-2014 09:20 AM

I just talked with Jason not to long ago, and again depending on when your in town, we will take you out on his Baja for a ride. Just PM me or rollwithit and let us know. We will be driving down on the 14th and be there in the morning, staying in Ft Lauderdale, and leaving late Sunday. We will be at the show one day, and out in the boat the rest of the time in Lauderdale and Miami.

jvthundercat 01-11-2014 10:03 AM

It would be nice if BAJA would do something. Anyone got an "in" there?
You should also go to the the bajaboatowners website and see if anyone there will be around.

sy goldberg 01-11-2014 10:32 AM

I will make some calls to BAJA on Monday,I know some people there for many years.

Your Aces in my book Sy!

CGRIZZLE 01-13-2014 07:29 AM

I can't believe all the support as of right and I can't even begin to tell you guys how much he will appreciate this. I'm making the calls today to those of you whom responded especially Blue Octane and Sy Goldberg.

Do you guys typically do some sort of meetup while you are down there visiting the show? Like at a bar or something?

sy goldberg 01-13-2014 08:49 AM

I just spoke to John Walker, the president of BAJA and was told that the MIAMI show will not work out but he extended an invite for your group to come to the factory and they will provide whatever they can there.

doc_texoma 01-13-2014 09:32 AM

Thoughts and prayers... You should setup a donation pool for him as well.

CGRIZZLE 01-13-2014 01:37 PM

Already have a donation pool from him. We started it early on in his treatments to help cover costs and raised a little over $7,000. He is closing in on the last of the treatments with no luck thus far. At this point, it's really just about trying to do things that he wants to do while he still can and spend time with the family.

doc_texoma 01-13-2014 01:46 PM

understood.. Godspeed.

The tentative dates are the 12th through the 17th. We still haven't decided on whether we are flying or driving. We may drive down and fly back as well or vice-versa. We are booking everything this weekend and if we drive, we will most likely probably make a pit stop at the Baja factory in NC on the way down.

ChrisK 01-13-2014 05:41 PM

We will be there at that time. Like I said we will be driving down from my house in Orlando on that Friday, and spending the weekend in Ft Lauderdale and leaving either late Sunday or Monday. Of course one day will be at the show, but the others are a vacation/boating time for us. PM me your phone number and I will call you. We don't have any plans set in stone, but just a general idea of what we want to do. There is a party at the clevlander Saturday night that I think a few people will be attending.

AB From Windsor 01-13-2014 05:52 PM

Prayers for your father and your family and I hope everything works out for him.

CGRIZZLE 01-19-2014 01:02 PM

Just to update all of you. Mass General Hospital has stopped all treatments at this time and have given him two, maybe three months to live. The doctors said that the trial treatment will most likely not work because of the nature of the disease and extent that it has metastasized throughout his body (It’s literally in almost every muscle in his body at this point). He has one on his brain that they are extremely worried about if it starts growing. They said that if he continued the treatment, he will just get sicker and with the high percentage that it wouldn't work, they would rather have him just be comfortable for the remaining months instead of being miserable. Hospice will be called in pretty soon.

At this point, we are not sure if the trip mentioned above is going to happen. We don't think he will make a 24+hour drive nor would he want to and I'm afraid of bringing him on a commercial flight and risking being exposed to something that might make him sicker or less comfortable. We are meeting with the group in the next couple days to figure things out but I figured I would let the forum know and thank you for your prayers and support during this time.
