Born in Febuary boating by April, I believe an old Thompson tri-hull. Then grew up in my Dads 1979 18' Checkmate Eluder open bow w/ 200hp Merc that he bought new. I bought my first around age 21, 1979 17' Checkmate Trimate IV Open Bow w/ 140hp Mercruiser I/O. 45 MPH all day long with very little boat in the water, a blast named "Mississippi TURD". Currently on my second Checkmate, 1993 218 Persuader. Designer for Off-Road Machine Seat Mfg.

Technically I had 14' alumacraft as kid with a 9.9 outboard, and then when I was 16 I bought myself a Tigershark jet ski.
As far as a real boat goes I just got my first at the age of 26 (October 2nd one of the happier days of my life), it's a 1995 36' Apache. |

Re: OK members: What was your first boat?
No, not hooked to the blazer. I don't know if the blazer would pull the trailer empty. I pull her with a 2005 Dodge 3500 SRW, with a cummins in it. Even then I know she is behind me.

14' Fabuglas (I think) its the company Glastron before it became Glastron. I don't know what year it was, but I think it was made about the same time as the Titanic. I have a 17.5' Caravelle right now that I'm trading in on a 1989 Python Vector 24' that has all new interior and a rebuilt engine (440 hp). I'm new to Performance Boating. Any last minute advise?

My first
My first boat was a 10' flat bottm race boat with an open transom. It had to be driven on ones knees. At idle the 'cokpit' would fill up with water. Once you started to give it some gas, the water would drain. It first had a 7.5HP Johnson with tiller throttle. Within the first month, we put a Merc Hurricane with a deadmans throttle on it. My grandparents owned a resort on Bangs Lake in a far-north suburb of Chicago called Wauconda. One of my brothers friends took it out without me knowing it and proceeded to drive it into the seawall, turning it into splinters. The Merc broke off the transom and ended up on the patio. I still have that little motor somewhere...................... I was 10 years old at the time.
|
i bought a 21 four wins liberator with a 350 omc king cobra when i was 20. she topped up at 53 mph. spent more time rebuilding the drive then running the boat.
|
A little 13.5 foot boston whaler with a 60 on it.. Then my parents redid it so that it was a center console with a 45 evinrude with full trim. At the age of 12 we were kicking up a hell of a rooster tail trailing my dad's 30 foot Center console with triples..
It was great because we both had the exact same graphics on the side. My parents always had a boat for us up through college. Our last boat being a 36 Concept with twin 300's. Our parents always took care of us. My favorite was boring dad's 30 spectre with twin 540's. That would scoot up until Blake and I blew a drive. We were on restriction after that. |
My first boat was a 13-foot, all-aluminum Feathercraft. It had a wornout 50hp Merc OB. It was small, but we could water ski behind it.
My second boat was a 16-foot, fiberglass, closed-bow, purple, Sidewinder (out of California). It had a 90hp Merc OB. I am on my fifth boat, a 31-foot Cigarette Bullet with twin HP500's! :D |
Clay, my dad had a 15 foot Feathercraft aluminum boat with an Evenrude 75 on it in the early to mid 60"s. You sure could water ski behind it.

Mid 80s .... 5yr "time-out" for career and family Don't remember what the heck I was thinkin' ... Early 90s .... 32' Tollycraft Sedan w twin Chrysler V8s My family's favorite - my sons private condo-at-the-beach! Early 2000s .... 21' ???? Racing Sloop (sailboat) I still love sailing, but no one else in the family did! Mid 2000s .... 23' Baja Sea Rocket Still trying desperately to turn back the clock! |
I still haven't bought my first boat. Parents had boats all my life, performance boats from '91 - '05. They've downgraded to a party barge so at 29 years old I'm finally shopping for my own boat. :D
|
Well my first boat was a fairly humble affair. It was a steel pontoon of unspecified age(that means it was really old but no one knows exactly how long ago someone welded it up). It was about 12 feet long with a 60's era 25hp outboard engine. I was about 30 or 31 when I bought it.
Then I bought a 1988 Sunbird cuddy cabin with the 175hp 4.3 V6. Sold that last week and on this coming Friday I am picking up a 1988 Stingray SVS220 22' 320hp 5.7L EFI. I am 34 now. |
My first boat was given to me when I was 18. It was an 18' 1968 Starcraft (yellow) with a 50hp outboard. Ran on three cylinders for years. Top speed around 20mph. My now, father-in-law was going to put it out by the road with a FREE sign on it, so I told him I would take it. I got it running enough to go mess around with for a few summers then I end up selling it. Took that money and put it toward a 1988 Ebbtide 18' with a 4.3I/O with OMC drive. That thing gave me more trouble then the Starcraft. But when it ran it was strong. Got that when I turned 20. After "swimming" it back to the dock one too many times I walked into the local dealership and bought a brand new Yamaha jet boat in 2005 (I was 22) still have that boat, but am desperately saving for my first offshore boat. Because I tend to drive the Yami how I would drive an offshore. Hoping to have a 29-35 fountain/donzi/sunsation within the next two years. I boat right by the Sunsation factory and have seen them out testing many, many times including the F4 (sweet boat).

My first, at age 21 was a 1974 Spectra 19' jacuzzi jet boat with a 455 Olds. motor. Bought it as salvage (sunk along the beach in Lake Mi.) There's something about flat bottom boats with no freeboard that just don't seem to work well in Lake Michigan swells! The Pantera is much more suited to the task! I couldn't be happier!
