Tim, since my boat is at MTI right now, why don't you ask randy to throw some 1350's and big gears in her! Have randy take take her for a spin and see what she will do...LOL.
I like my 1100 set up though. Long as I can run with Chad, I'm happy! I like my lil dragster! |

Your exactly right on the size not makeing much if any difference in topend, I just didn't want to say it because it might hurt some feelers. The only advantge the smaller boat has is in acceleration because of less weight, do to the size difference. Top end won't really change because the longer tunnel will cary the bigger boat once it gets packing air. The biggest difference is going to be in set up and water condtions. As in your case the gear ration difference and the fact that the 1100's make more torque are big factors for him accelerating faster. 1.42 is a very low gear which gives great acceleration and makes you not notice the difference in load as much, but it will kill topend. I would bet he could turn a 40 pitch pretty easily. Also don't forget about prop rotation, this made 5 mph difference in my 44, as well as a big difference in acceleration and ride. Most people don't care for the ride and sterring with outboard rotation in a smaller ride, but I just couldn't give up the speed/acceleration so thats the way I ran mine most of the time. Just for reference my 44 ran 155 with 1075's and 167 with 1200 computers.

I ran about 152 with the 1075's but I put the Stage II Whipple Kit with the twin 2.9L blowers on this winter so we will see.... I will probably leave the 38" wheels on for now. With the 1.35 gears I should be able to go as fast as I need to and get there pretty quickly but anything faster than 160 is just too fast for me to be honest. I am very happy with the 150 range and getting there quick.
Just curious what rotation you were running and RPM's last yr. |

I think most of the MTI's run 150ish with 1075's reguardless of size. I think you will really like the upgrades, should be able to make 1200 on pump gas pretty easy, and hopefully got the rev limiter raised to 6500ish. The combination of these two things will make a huge difference. It was over 10mph for my 44.

I've heard that Merc props always run one size larger than Hering, if you like your 38 Herings then go with 37 Mercs.( this lowers the slip # on the Merc prop) I always liked the way the Herings ran. I do hear of fewer people slinging blades on the Merc props so there is definitely value in that.
