What is the best boat to purchase for your family? It seems easy but we've met many boaters who say they wish they'd bought a different boat in hind sight. Some thought should to be given to what type of boat will best meet your needs or you'll wind up not using your boat or the wife won't go along. For some of you that music to your ears, but seriously if a boat doesn't meet the needs of the family the family won't go.
You need to decide what you will use your boat for...some it's fishing, water sports, leisure cruises, travelers, speed freaks and show offs. These are the categories and you need the right boat for the right float.
Here's what we recommend:
For the real deal sports fisherman a bass boat or center counsel. (center console are more family oriented)
Water sports like skiing or tubing Ski Nautique or Correct Craft are good choices.
Leisure boaters who aren't worried about speed would enjoy a pontoon, deck boat or a bow rider we like the Regal brand but there are many. This is preferred by many families because there not to fast and have ample room for a family and friends. They are typically affordable as well.
Those who like to spend the weekend on the boat would like a cuddy cabin, houseboat or a full cabin. There are many brands and price ranges go from mild to wild. Some boats are stocked with sleeping areas, kitchens and restrooms. These boats are very family friendly but sometimes size can limit where you can put in and fuel costs can limit how often you may go. Bigger boats also require a reliable bigger vehicle to tow them.
Showoffs are the guys with the big high dollar rides. These are your tunnel boats, v-drives and jet boats. These are go fast boats and often very pricey. So you wouldn't necessarily take along the toddlers as they might fly out or damage the seats. All kidding aside, these are the least family friendly for families with little kids or nervous wives. Please know when we say "show offs" we mean it with love.
Last, but not least, you have the speed freaks and that's us! (With a hint of show off)
We have what appears to be a family boat with a cuddy cabin and regular seating but we are stocked with a high performance small block engine. You'll know it when we fire up the engine. (little kids have cried and ladies have jumped on the dock)
We find this the perfect fit for our family it satisfies the hubbies need for speed while providing nice trips to the lake for Momma and the kids. Costs depend on how fast you wanna go and if you can do your own work. We bought our boat for $500 on the side of the rode and with some cash, time, bartering and sweat "Speedoman" was born.
So if your planning your adventure in boating and you want the best float for your family think about what you'll use your boat for, how often you'll use it and what you can afford. Big boats, fast boats and fully loaded boats are wonderful but be sure you can afford to use them too. We hope everybody finds the best boat for their float and when you do we'll see you on the lake!

I would be a speed freak. I like going fast, sound awesome, and having an awesome looking boat. Only three times a year do I ever have anyone else ride with me. I enjoy going out solo. The person that wrote the article I can't believe they left out big block engine. That's what a true offshore boat has in it. Seriously a small block engine? Only if you have a boat that's 20' or less.

Sorry did not mean to leave the big blocks out. My wife writes the blog's and we do run a mean small block 5.8L ford motor in our boat at this time which has good power and good on fuel and your right it is less than 20" . It is a lot of fun and surprise's a lot of people.

Don't worry about it. I just wanted to point out about the fact that offshore boats use one or more big block engines in it that's all. That's cool that your able to surprise a lot of people with your boat. With it's power and sound. Cool videos that you have. I'm sure that you'll be able to get an offshore boat someday.

And for the record the offshore boats are kid friendly. I take my 3 yr old and 21 month old out all the time and they love it. My wife feels that it is more safe than any bow rider due to the high freeboard, length, and ride quality. Maybe your wife should ride in one before she starts saying that they aren't family friendly boats. But we don't bring Cheetos.
