OSO how long?

Being new to the board this spring, I was wondering how long ago OSO started? Also how did it get started?

Cord 08-22-2002 03:53 PM

I found OSO about two years ago. Back then it was a message board. The board was nothing but a bash-a-thon of people swearing at each other. A short time later Jeffery pulled the plug and shut the board down.

A couple of months later a new board was up. This board was similar, but much simpler than the board that you see today. The group was very small, everybody knew everyone and we were all friends.

About a year after that Jeffery bought a new software package. The board had a bunch of improvements, but there were some problems with getting it up and running. The biggest limitation seemed to be with the server capacity. The need to register was also forced upon us due to the actions of a single board member.

The board version that you see now hasn't been in place all that long, what maybe 6 months? It solved some of the past problems and created a bunch of new ones. After a frustrating period the bugs have been pretty well ironed out.

It's been around long enough for Audiofn to have over 7000 posts!!! Oh, and I have a few also!!

Nuespeed.

Nuespeed.

Nuespeed.

Nuespeed.

Anyone remember that guy????? :)

thisistank 08-22-2002 05:12 PM

Cord, theres only been 3 variations of the board right??
I remember that far back...When the classified section was just a long list of boats you could scroll down:D :D

vagrant 08-22-2002 05:20 PM

We were all friends. You can say that again. :D

Biggus 08-22-2002 06:17 PM

Was it 98-99 that the orig board started? Man, that was whacked! everyone said they had a 42 Fountain with triple 1000`s :D or a giant Skater! I always thought everyone on back then was some 13 yr old kid pretending to be a hero!

I was there also for a short time and left because every post was a slamfest all the time. Audio convinced me to come back in April 2001.

At first I did not like the new format but I do look forward to reading the posts when I get home from work.

hp500efi 08-22-2002 06:30 PM

Oh I remember those days real well. The board changed right away as soon as everyone had to become a member with an e-mail address.

vagrant 08-22-2002 07:22 PM

Biggus,
How is your cigarette doing.
David

WILL SOMEONE GIVE US A "BORN ON DATE" ?

thisistank 08-22-2002 07:49 PM

User's have a born on date......I liked the user numbers though....Kind've miss that part.

H2Xmark 08-22-2002 07:54 PM

I miss the # also, its been so long I dont even remember mine:D

Cord 08-22-2002 08:13 PM

Under the user options there used to be a list of every member of the board. It had the date that the member had joined. Recently (in the last coupld of months) all the dates got changed to the same one. That was unfortinate as it was rather interesting reading the list, comparing the date joined with number of posts per day.

Mikee,
So, are you trying to say you have close to 7,000 posts counting the ones you posted as Neuspeed? Or without? :D:D:D:D GOTCHA!

I ordered trim pumps caps way back "in the day" I think in between boards. Went back later to check the site, and there it was. Anyone remember Hurikane? Provider of fake furs, Zolex's and anything else you'd send him money for:) Was that you too Waterfoul? LOL!

Mark

bajabob38 08-22-2002 08:35 PM

If you click on your profile I believe you can see your member # in the address line (at the end of it) something like id=xxx I don't know if it's exact, but darn close

Tonto 08-23-2002 12:06 AM

I started when everyone was barbecuing Jenifer Coen on the old message board. That got pretty rude to say the least.

Biggus 08-23-2002 06:38 AM

Vagrant, the Top Gun has run flawlessly all season! I am so happy with it I`m afraid I`ll jinx myself if I gloat about it too much!!!

The only problem I`ve encountered with owning it has been the NOISE POLICE! They`ve been relentless, I`ve been pulled over 4 times this month:mad: and have to go to court in October for excessive noise......oh well, I`ll deal with it:D

Thanks for asking,

Kurt.

enticer 08-23-2002 06:52 AM

That doesn't seem to work for me. Fortunately, I saved mine.

OffshoreOnly 08-23-2002 07:39 AM

Three years next month. OSO started off as a board for SCOPE members to communicate with each other and the word spread rapidly as it evolved in to what it is today.

Enticer, please have a more positive attitude. We try to provide as much as we can for free and will try to keep it this way the best we can.

OSO

Sean 08-23-2002 08:05 AM

Man...has it been that long??? I was original member #66 but I lurked alot back then...it really was a slam fest! :)

I think the board has come a long way and certainly a huge improvement over the original one...but I don't remember the Long Island gang Gary speaks of...

Cutwater 08-23-2002 08:27 AM

Nice; I didnt know that trick. I remember mine being in the seventies but wasnt sure exactly. Address line says 73.

Wally 08-23-2002 10:28 AM

thnk about this!

Man if we were still back at the original format can you imagine how long it would take you to scoll down to the end of the Apache topic right now! LOL!! Thats One good thing about this format to say the least! :D

C_Spray 08-23-2002 12:06 PM

Found it in 1999

When I first found it, all the messages were listed in outline form. Like Wally said, you had to walk through a lot of stuff to get to the message you were looking for. The Long Island a$$-kicking dramas occurred just before the first reincarnation of the board, then there was the "other web site" trashing dramas, then APBA vs. SBI, then Newspeed (Feb. 2001), who flooded the board with junk, then APBA vs. SBI, then the second reincarnation of the board, then Cats vs. Vees, then APBA vs. SBI, then Supercrash (who was annoying and frightening, but harmless), then APBA vs. SBI, then the third (current) reincarnation of the board, then ABPA vs. SBI, then Apache vs Apache, then.....

RiverGirl 08-23-2002 12:57 PM

Minimal charges....

Ain't nothing in life fo free. Minimal charges here and there for lots of info and entertainment.
I agree ... to keep OSO up and running.... small price.
once your addicted.... it's a habit you just can't break.
Plus look at all the friends, enemies, lovers, whatever whom you have met here!

The knowledge & history that can be found here blows my mind at times.

A big learning tool for me.:D

I assume that OSO receives revenue from all their advertisers. Is it enough to offset all the costs? I don’t know. I would like to be able to compare OSO with TV networks that generates their revenue from advertisers. I can’t imagine paying CBS for the privilege of watching Dan Rather read the news.

What's really sad is that one night many months ago I figured it out:rolleyes:

NW_Jim 08-25-2002 03:07 AM

Anyone remember the old rec.boats.racing.power newsgroup? All I remember over there was tunnel boat guys trashing the offshore guys and Benny Robertsons first disqualification racing for Reggie. They couldn't understand why they couldn't cheat and get away with it.

Wasn't that before this board or at the same time. Maybe that newsgroup still exsists. I remembered my number. I guess I missed being an original member by 2 months.

Just checked and it's still there. Different players but still alot of crybabies.

I have been around for a couple of years - not much at typing, so i do not reply that often.

I am amazed at the information that can be garnered at this site! With some of the recent posts to Jennifer's and Jo & Dre's situation, I am truly amazed as to the amount of empathy, consideration, intelligence and friendship, shown on this board.

You have managed to attract a very diverse, knowledgeable and fun crew here on the board. Accolades to all for a job well done!

Sorry - I think I posted twice - opps

I am truly computer challenged!

Back4More 08-25-2002 07:59 AM

I looked in on the old board time to time.
Total BS fest.
Was or still am #108 when it was still shown.
Remember the time when you where able to give another member star ratings? :D

Cord 08-25-2002 09:39 AM

Yea, OSO actually trusted us to act like adults and rate each other fairly. Boy, that sure lasted long! lol :)

J-Bonz 09-08-2011 08:19 PM

Good history lesson here.........

THEJOKER 09-08-2011 08:21 PM

I've been on here since 2000. Can't believe it's been almost 11 years!

hp500efi 09-08-2011 08:28 PM

GeeterB 09-09-2011 06:18 AM

Been around long enough to remember hyperbaja sell a "rolex" :coolcowboy:
Cuda challenged anyone to a showdown not long ago..no offense meant cuda
There was a parts dealer with many problems and bad bad bad behavior
Have also seen a manufacturer almost completely fall from grace but kick and scratch his way back into the good graces of the community
I kinda like the poodle thing when it started...seemed Nort had a thing for poodles so he masked it by calling everyone a poodle
The board is a great resource for me and my boat when I think of diffent mods to do to my boat, glen george has boat similar to mine and put a shorty and big tabs on it..now I have a goal for mine..pics looked awesome too
I was thinking about when I found oso and it was in 2001 in my old office..lurked for a long time reading threads thinking these west coast boaters are nuts but seem to have a good time ripping on each other..I guess I remember where I was when I found oso
