Whats the best tow rig?
I am searching for a new tow rig not sure what to get. Been looking at the F-650 and C-5500. I had a few guys tell me that unless they are 4X4 they are not good at the ramp?

Think of 4x4 as insurance, when you need it, it's there. I have seen some pretty slippery ramps and also other people are not as considerate. I will be upgrading this year hopefully, but the first time I pulled my 33ol up the ramp with my wife's Expedition, some bASS fishermen had pulled up and dumped their bilge on the ramp.
It was oily sludge and I backed right through it. Took a bit to get up the ramp with lots of smoking tires!! 4x4 would have made this a non event! Jmho.. Resale is always better on 4x4s also :-) |
4x4 LOW sure is nice

Just make sure it says Ford Super Duty on it somewhere.

I had a couple ford 550 4x4s never used 4x4 now have a 650 2 wheel and don't have an issue if its slippery you dump the air ride and it walks right up the 650 or a sport chassis [ ive had a couple] will stop better than any 4x4 lighter duty . another thought when you go 650 / sport chassis you need a cdl

I would never even consider buying a truck, much less a tow rig, that wasn't 4x4. When you need it it's a life saver.

Sportchassis
Then F650 C5500 |
The Sportchassis Medium Duty Freightliner trucks are hard to beat… All you need is a decent set of tires on the back. The electronic locker works pretty well. They ride worlds better than the F650 trucks…
But, notching that you have a 36' cat…. All you need is a nice new one ton dually… We have a '14 F350 that routinely pulls 20,000lbs with no trouble… No, I wouldn't pull 25k with it, but it'll sure handle 15k with ease. Get 4x4 in the dually pickups. The FL is MUCH heavier on the back, thus more traction. |
On the c4500-5500. Without the rear air suspension in a 4x4 they ride like a brick.. Mine was Monroe conversion with dually bed had air seats an all but not rear air suspension. Once loaded up it was tolerable but after a trip getting out of it after 3hrs felt kinda whipped..
