Default Best starter??

I have a starter that the solenoid is not wanting to work on %100 of the time. At times I have to turn the key a few times to get it to crank. I can hear it trying to engage. Now I don't want to have to replace this thing twice and I have heard to many horror story's of guys tossing brand new starts in and having them fail in a few hours. If I'm going to coat myself in lube and squeeze down in there to replace it... I only want to do it once.

Thx
Mike

it's probably the mercruiser starter relay by the mercathode panel. If no you cant beat a reduction gear starter from summit or jegs

I can hear a clicking noise from the engine compartmant when I turn the key. So was just assuming it was the start getting jammed trying to engage. Maybe I'm wrong.

Merc uses an additional relay to boost voltage to the actual starter solenoid, have someone use a test light to see if power is going through the merc relay when key is turned before changing starter. I changed mine and a buddies this year, they are available on e-bay cheap

replace the solenoid that is in the harness on the engine looks like a trim solenoid. They are mechanical inside an when go bad they dont hold the voltage when cranking. I had similar prob that fixed my issue.

i agree, the merc starters are good.most of the time it is the slave solonoid not the starter.
