Same here,,retired after 15years DJing on South Beach in 2000..
Couldnt take the 6-7am nights any longer..
What they do today has no relationship to what we did,
we mixed music to make people dance. Period.
Today they are pretty faces,entertainers,musicians,programmers,etc
They play synthesizers,samplers,etc..
Most can not mix at all if you take away the auto mixers, auto tune, mixing software and computers
People no longer dance,,they stand there staring at the stage while videotaping on their Iphone.
Then again they are making millions and we didnt so what the hell do I know!
More power to Rockys kid
for making it big!!

The 80s in South Florida was way too much fun, I miss those days!!
And yes, the modern era of Dance DJs is a whole nuther thing...no way we could have even imagined back then how things are now!
Cheers,
Dave

Dave,
yes, knew Club Nu well,, the main DJ there George Alvarado is a friend of mine,
I started at the Forge every night 86-89,then moved on to spin regularly at Le Loft,Van Dome,S.O.B.s,Bash,Match,Bolero.Folia,Egoiste,Dune
and ton more I dont remember any longer,
LOL...
my last night was New Years Eve 2000 at Nikki Beach..
Moved from Miami to Palm Beach that year, moved to Texas two years later. Sold my properties right before market crashed.
Yes Miami was fun back then,,
didnt need to be a baller to live there well and have lots of fun..

Saw the latest posting of DJ's and how they are making more money than any of the movie stats in Hollywood except one.
Steve Aoki, a son of Rocky made $23,000,000.00. last year .....yes THAT WAS JUST LAST YEAR ......as a DJ operating in dance clubs and casinos all over the world.

I can relate about the late nights..so I went full time into Club Design, mostly Lighting/Sound/Video Systems. Being in South Beach you must remember Club NU...and maybe Club Boca in Boca (duh)...had a blast doing those clubs. There were a few more I did in South and Central Florida, but not as well known as those.

22 yrs in bars before RE.
Steve Aoki is one the short list of innovators among the EDM DJ's. He had a record label on his own.
He is the youngest of wife #1. The daughter that didn't sue Rocky is the youngest of wife #2.
She was a model and went into movies as well.

Charlie,
Apologies for the Thread hijack (I'll try to make this my last one), and THANKS for stirring up some great ole memories, and even more so for bringing together a few old Club guys here that probably met and knew each other back in the day,... yet never knew some of us were here on OSO all along....too COOL!
Cash Bar,
If you knew Club Boca you may also remember Zippers in Ft Lauderdale beside the executive airport, circa 89ish. That was another one of my crazy creations with 19 electric hoists moving all the lighting up and down 2 stories..
BTW, I heard my crazy underground subwoofer system idea underneath the Dance Floor at Club Boca finally flooded out a few years back...someone forgot to check the bilge, err sump pump..opps!
Here is shot of Club Boca before it was opened to the public, hope it brings back some memories for you.
HTRDLNCN,
Here is one for you, also just before Club NU opened to the public (still remember that Grand Opening Party!!)
Sorry for the poor photo quality, they are quick cell phone pics of pics from my photo album.
Cheers,
Dave

A friend of the family built that building new, made next to nothing on it when he was forced to sell it.

All this South Florida talk is killing me. I was at LIV when Guetta performed a couple weeks ago, the place was mobbed. Miami is really killing it with the EDM scene at places like Set, LIV, and Story as there are always some big name guys performing on a regular basis.
