Crap, there are a couple of Jersey inlets that are crazy just about every day. I remember as a kid trying to go out Mansquan (sp?) inlet slow and "safe"- that scared the **** into permanent memory that power is your friend so use it.

Lake Michigan waves are almost always close together, and 3-5 footers can pop up in no time. My wife always yells at me to slow down, but that's literally the worse possible solution. Angle the boat towards the waves, trim it right so you stay on top of them, and push the sticks forward!
