Who coils their lines on the dock like this?
I braid them after tying up.
A dock hand looking for a tip?
In salt water boating we call them Dock LINES, and yes I do that, and then flush them for 10 minutes once I get back to the lift!:evilb:
I tie mine to the opposing cleat or pole....about ankle high. HAH !

Nobody has time for that.

I am slightly OCD. I do it on the docks and if the excess is on my boat deck, I will do it there. My idiot friends enjoy uncoiling them shortly after I coil them because they know it drives me crazy...
I coil them up to keep them from being a trip hazard but it never ends up looking as perfectly coiled as that photo. In too big a rush for a beverage I guess.
Yes I do. Been doing it many years.
I don't need to as my wife coils the dock lines.
Padraig |
As others have mentioned it's effective in salt water boating. Don't ask me why! :)
I just tie up and then kick them in the water lol

Don't coil them. if someone can't walk near messy ropes without tripping, shouldn't be on a dock.
I actually make a point to kick them (unless they are on a blow boat) :evilb:
i have a short set of lines for just such a use, out to dinner or at a transient dock. Either a simple pile or clove hitch, i prefer a clove high or low on the piling and whatever line is left over i will put another clove just above or below it a foot or two with the balance of line  . . . .

This poll is not like the presidential election,it only let me vote one time...What is a Powerplay?:D
I do the stand and lasso drop. In my mind it supposed to look like that!
I cant coil the home water hose reel |
The guy with the powerplay will vote, Lmfao
like they stay that way once the compression coming out the dry pipes starts popping off. One good whack cleaning her out and they're in the neighbors slip. Lol.
Mine goes on a trailer, I braid them though. |

OMG, look at the color of the PowerPlay graph! Coincidental? I think not! Purple, coiling ropes, next thing ya know you will have slip down in Suagatuk with rest of the "Meat Swingers".
There goes my free boat storage! |
What are these dock lines you speak of? My Progression came with a stainless rail and two swimsuit models that stand on the dock and hold it while I conduct business ashore. You dock liners got robbed!
I really think the powerboaters who do coil their lines are wannabe cruiser crowd peeps :cartman:
No coils on seaplanes...planes leaving dock dragging dock lines. https://youtu.be/JjpMSqOf8ic.

Not docked long enough to bother.
I do it. But then again I do have a good case of OCD. It's neat, clean and simple.

Here's how all the cool kids do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXJpZUQc0jU |
Professional mariners and boaters who know what they are doing coil the lines like that. It's called Flemishing. If you lay line out in parallel rows its called Flacking and if you lay line down in a series of figure eights it's called Faking. See your subscription to OSO is worth it! LOL
correct . . . and the braid everyone is referring to known as chain sinnet . . . . yes well worth the price of admission. Now if i could just get them to stop calling it a center council :picard1: :D

I don't know how to do the braid, so I will coil them if I tying up; especially if boat is going to be there for a while.
The coil is a little less obstructive when laying on the dock. Otherwise, my GF has taught most of her friends that go out with us to do the braid. They are usually doing such as I finish shutting down and ensuring fenders are properly placed. |
Run into dock hard enough > boat gets stuck = no lines needed (and it keeps Glassdave in business!)
I grew up calling those slipknots, never knew any other term.
Same knots excellent for extension cords btw. |
