simple reason is the fear of a cable splinter as I am working with the cable.

I like it. Interesting concept. I don't typically have a problem with 'getting stuck' on the bow stop pads though. I use a spray wax like this one...

...by spraying it on the bow stop pads before I retrieve the boat. It allows the boat to slide right into place, and when it leaves a slight bit of residue on the boat, it's wax and wipes right off with a microfiber towel.
