After spending hours, with multiple cuts and bruises from working in the engine bay of a twin engine boat... I can see why someone would want an outboard boat...JS

I'd you can get the power and electronics for that I would be shocked.

Well this should help the middle class - Not!

Obama is about to propose a provocative new tax on oil

U.S. President Barack Obama will propose a new $10 a barrel fee on oil in his budget plan next week, as the White House seeks to boost the nation's investments in clean transportation projects, the White House said on Thursday.

I understand that. That's why actual middle class folks aren't buying boats.

I feel they are buying boats

Just not new.....it is an unstable wconomy. Even if they offered new at $100k I think the middle class would have a hard time saying yes.. it's the times, not the boat. Toys need to be cash buys these days.

VVT, direct injection, etc. I hate to say it but I think I'd go with a VP on my next boat. And yeah, I remember buying my 1st boat back in the 80s. 18' boat/motor/trailer package for 12K!! Nothing like that these days. And boy did I have a blast on that boat with my friends.
When I bought a new boat last year, I went from the old 496 merc to the new 6.2l volvo. The volvo is listed as 5hp more, but there is no comparison in the feel on the lake between the two. The volvo is just in a different league.

I sure wish the open bow version was available last year. That's in line with the pricing on 27 ft cobalts. Hell, MSRP on a similar R5 this year as my boat is $138k.

And if you ever get a chance to drive the 5.3L Direct Injection 350 hp Volvo Penta that will put you back in your seat and you will think its a big block. That thing is fast and accelerates very fast.. Top that off with the DP Volvo Penta outdrive and that is one great riding boat especially in a Cobalt or Bryant or Regal. 2 boats made extremely well and drive very well. The Regal is not that far behind either.

The V-6 Volvo 240 hp 4.3L Direct injection walks all over the Merc new 4.5L - 250 hp. Kills it in every aspect.

You think Merc parts are expensive ? Double that and you have a Volvo part.

Ahh the old Volvo KD Diesels. I still have nightmares about then sometimes.

What what how much ? no. That can't be the price. Really ? We'll give me 2 of them since I only got 3 months out of the last supercharger clutch.

Give me a hull designed around an Arnesons performance capability with an Arnesons drive with a LS platform built and marinized by a reputable engine builder.

Nice little bullet proof 500 hp package for the family boat.
