Hoping to get to visit the west end of lake Erie soon. I always hear how insanely nasty it is there. Last night i spent a solid hour watching boat videos from lake erie fun runs, poker runs, random weekends of kellys island and PIB bar scenes, and so on. What is puzzling, is i seen tons of small boats running around. Small single engine boats, small cruisers , old small bajas, crownlines, etc running back and forth to the islands having a good time.

Around here, its pretty rare that a guy with a 25ft single engine, will travel 15 plus miles away from port every weekend. I tried it once years back with my old 241 Liberator. Once i stuffed the bow at 40mph, nearly blew the windshield out, was soaked head to toe with bilge pump working overtime, I realized that boat had no business on Lake Michigan, at least not near downtown chicago where there is natural waves to deal with, and waves from 50ft cruisers buzzing around.

Doesnt matter what you have, this lake will bust it up. Even a Cigarette.

I spent 15 years on Lake Erie in an 18' searay.
Most of the boats on the lake are small runabouts.

The thing with lake Erie is that it will kick up instantaneously because it's so shallow. The saving grace is there are lots of places to harbor if the lake kicks up. (It also lays right back down)

also, it's only 6.5 miles or so from the mainland (Marblehead) to Kelly's island.

Kinda why this whole folly was up wacky from the get go. "Offshore" boats in a 6.5 mile drag race.

Huron, around Kelly's and back to Huron would be a race.

is it too early to schedule the poundfest 2018?

Thats it ? 6.5 miles to the island? So like a 5 minute boat ride ? I always thought it was further

Anyone watch Deadliest Catch last night? I'm thinking False Pass for the Poundfest! :boat: Not quite LOTO water but close! :bunnydance:

Yep, 6.5 miles. Around the same for PIB

but its through 80 ft waves, to and from, and you have to dodge the kraken, as well as fend off pirates and Davey Jones...

All the talk about west end Erie and LOTO chop, cross chop and quick changing water condition and no one brings up Lake St. Clair. Try it on a Sunday around 6pm. with any wind and almost every boat on that lake headed west for 10 Mile rd. or the Clinton River or running north/south along the shoreline. The whole American side becomes a Maytag washing machine, actually a flushing toilet with all the pee deposited on a weekend.
But I did love running in the channels and river.

Yes, I watched it. Sounds like a good spot for poundfest. :)
