Talked to the surveyor friend and this was very common on drives of that age mostly due to the dissimilar metal between the drive and prop. It always attacks the weakest material thus the drive housing.

I would not be surprised to find that there is an issue with electrical current in the water due to a little of everything. Marina and boats. Yet another reason why I keep my boat on a trailer at the marina. Not to mention the scum/dirt line that forms after just a couple of days.

Only time I see this is when a boat is plugged in to shore power and the Mercathode is non-functioning or missing. Looking at the anodes, but are intact but little wear.

While Aluminum or Zinc can be used in salt, and Aluminum or Magnesium can be used in fresh, I would recommend Aluminum

I'm guessing the owner replaces anodes when nec if the boat is in the water for a few days but has never looked further into what is really causing the corrosion.

Didn't realize you sold your fountain after all the work you did on it.
I live 45 minutes from the listing broker and I can find out or go look at the boat for you if you wish.
His asking price seems high but the boat has low hours and looks clean in the pics.
It is not uncommon to see some corrosion on our outdrives around this area.
Who knows why.
Zincs, bad water with chemicals, electric current and some times too powerful power washers.
Most of us sand down, prime and keep repainting if it continues.

Just reading the description of the boat they say it has been lift kept in the lake.
I suspect the drives may have been left down and have been left slightly in the water.
If the lift was electric, which it likely was there may have been current escaping from the lift that caused the corrosion or paint blistering that may have then been too heavily power washed to clean the lower unit.
Just my best guess knowing the small lakes were the boat may have been used in the north of Toronto area. Bob

Broker has said the boat could probably use a polish which suggests to me the nice shiny photos may not be recent. I hope to hear more tomorrow before moving any further.

Make sure you get current pictures. I have been misled in the past about a few items I was looking to purchase that showed the item years before it was for sale. What a waste of time and money on my side.

If you consider moving forward I can connect you with my surveyor friend (SAMS Certified) if you want to get a survey done prior to the purchase. He is very detailed in his inspection (a little anal) but that is what you want when buying a boat. He lives in the same city as the boat.
