Agree, I couldn't stand it when my boat ran beautifully all summer long. :D

Actually, the 496 is cheap to maintain. But if you modify it, you risk some problems... Leave it alone and they are good for 800-1000 hours. Just do regular oil changes, dont run it at 5000 RPM all the time and you are good to go.

FWIW we ran twin 496s WFO for poker runs, only giving them a rest for card stops. They actually were chirping every time the boat started to surface the props, they were on the hairy edge of the limiter. Only problem with them was the fuel pumps do not hold up to ethanol.

I've had to replace one IAC valve in that time. Maintenance is key to these. I also recommend owning a scan tool and knowing how to use and understand it.

"Extended periods" is a vague term. Could mean 5 hours . . . .

I much prefer to go BOATING on the weekends, not WRENCHING.

on our 32 sunsation we have 400+ hours of trouble free...TOUBLE FREE running....change oil in drives and engines on or before 75 hours. change water impellers every season...like was stated above, if you like boating and not wrenching you can't beat these engines IMO.

I agree. I run it hard and it likes it. Plan to add the Raylar HO525 kit over the winter. Interested to see how it likes an extra 100hp!

The coolest part of that kit was the sheet-metal intake that they stopped making.

I'm glad I never read the owners manual. My sticks get pinned to the helm on poker runs, and my 496s seem to enjoy it.
