Actually, the 496 is cheap to maintain. But if you modify it, you risk some problems... Leave it alone and they are good for 800-1000 hours. Just do regular oil changes, dont run it at 5000 RPM all the time and you are good to go.

Merc states in the owners manual to not run past 3/4 throttle for extended periods. FWIW... I love mine. It's been a extremely reliable engine since bought in 14'. I've had to replace one IAC valve in that time. Maintenance is key to these. I also recommend owning a scan tool and knowing how to use and understand it.

on our 32 sunsation we have 400+ hours of trouble free...TOUBLE FREE running....change oil in drives and engines on or before 75 hours. change water impellers every season...like was stated above, if you like boating and not wrenching you can't beat these engines IMO.
