Complete restoration. Told customer I was geeked to flip it over and start on his new console. Carpentry vs sanding epoxy primer. |

Blues on the stereo, no pressure, work at your pace, while it’s fun day. Work an hr, take a break and read OSO threads then back to work. Priceless and my favorite part of having my shop in the back yard. Couldnt be happier w/today’s engineering project and don’t think I’ll be able to break. Top, cross bar is two layers of 3/4”, 7 ply, Okume marine plywood. Knees are single pc of 3/4”. |

Damnit son you do good work, and I feel fortunate to own a piece of it ;-)

Just listed the Latham hydraulic steering from the old Bravo Drive in misc if anyone needs one. Cleaned up would pass as new. |

We rolled by a CG cutter at about 70, and got a salute from the deck crew. I often wondered if they thought we were brave to be out in 30 degree weather, or we were just stupid and would be needing an intervention later that day!

Looks like a Speedy Tank to me. Project is moving along.

Let’s build a bracket.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d0eaac9c4.jpeg I’ve moved this fkg door three times and it sucked every time. Way over a 100 lbs and tried to crush me getting it on the horses today. But if you want good small glass parts, this is s great way to do it. |

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...985bfb467.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...72d49161d.jpeg Bigboat, hadn’t even thought about it. Payup took his 43’ Tiger down last November. Totally changes the trip for me and I normally more fun down there w/o the boat. Project update: Finished the mold for the platform portion and got 2 layers of mat and the balsa core in yesterday. Planned 2 layers of 1708 on the core too but had a near disaster and almost lost the whole thing. Resin I’ve been using forever takes a ton of catalyst to kick in the cold (65* in shop) and I just switched suppliers 🤨 Old batch ran out mid project, switched to new, same catalyst in a 1/2 gl of resin and it kicked before I even got to the mold. Rut roh. Managed to save the platform portion though. Hope to get the 1708 on today. Then I’ll pull it from the mold and attach it to the bracket portion and start the real glass portion. Motor board is 2 layers of 11 ply, 3/4” Okume mahogany w/2 layers of mat sandwiched between. Having a party in the barn tomorrow or would look like a bracket by Sunday. Not sure if I posted this already or not but doing a Fla road trip in Jan to retrieve motors. |
Wow ! Nice work! Nice shop! |

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...36734dd3e.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2d4546be4.jpeg Finally, the last pc of the puzzle. After wks and wks of games/promises I finally got lucky on motors. Stayed old school/low budget and scored a second, ‘2000 V-6 JohnRude while following the wife around Fla for biz. One is a 225 and one is 200 but that’s just a carb change and I have them in the shop. Both are also RH but that’s a gear case change and the RH case will almost pay for the new LH case. Since they’re both in Fla and I’ll have to go get them, figured I’d pick me up a scooter too 😎 We flew down this time and rented a p/u and thought we could pull off driving them home from this trip. $2200. to drop the Alamo rental off back home in Ohio 😂 |
To those asking, we flew down for work for my wife. At that point we only had one motor sourced so no plans to haul only one home. We lucked into the second while down. The PIA happened when trying to change travel plans mid stream to haul both motors, and the bike home. Like last minthte flights, the rental co’s bang you for that and for one way, 1200 mile trips. Drove to the Keys a yr ago and towed my utility trailer down, hoping to score/haul two motors home and came back w/nothing. We will take my truck/trailer down in 2 wks and bring it all home. |

How do you release the part from glass ? How many layers underneath to finish and tab together ? Does the bracket get bolted or bonded ? If bonded how many layers will it take and is there a bottom between the knees or a third knee going in ? Again nice project and documentation |
Nice Johnrude you picked up!!!
|
Thx guys. Safari, the secret is the glass patio door. Resin won’t stick to glass but it still got 3 coats of wax as did rest of mold which was a one use piece. Yes it will get a bottom to enclose the bulkheads which will equal 340 lbs of flotation according to my math. I will make another mold for the mounting flange which will be a 1/4” of 1708 cloth. That then gets bonded to the bottom of the platform, the bulkheads and bottom. The final pc gets bolted to the transom after I roll on non skid and install an under platform ladder. Bonz, to me, those OMCs are like small block Chevys. Take care of them and last forever. When the need arises, they can be rebuilt on the kitchen table w/a crescent wrench. Cant wait to get them home and paint them silver to match the boat. Should look good and run better. Planning on putting a pad on the bottom and would expect to see low 80’s w/the stock motors and high 80’s w/hot rod powerhead I am collecting parts for. Should be a screaming orgasm to drive fast too. |
I like the fact that everything (or mostly everything) is thought out in the sense of "how can I design, fabricate & piece together as much of the build all by myself without spending big $$$ for platform, new motors, glass work etc; etc;

Putting on (adding material) for a pad or cutting out and building.
This is an interesting read with how it was done and with some layer/material count info https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...at-deck-6.html |
Thx! Great thread on a gorgeous boat. Funny too, I have the stones to cut up a boat that virtually worthless but a boat like that 😳 Ive Done enough similar that did NOT work that I’m not sure I could have thrown that switch. Way cool. I understand the purpose/affect of a notch and like them. IMO, my boats too short plus the bracket will do similar. On the pad, I’m planning on 5.5” wide. I’ll lay it up in sections on my door then bond the pcs together before bonding it to the keel. On lamination schedule, I will eye ball it as I go. I have various materials at hand. While living in Fla I worked a few yrs for a custom fish bote builder and we used all core types, bagged, infused, light RTM etc. One bonus was being paid to learn and the second was collecting all their scrap cloth, mat etc. What is scrap to a builder is perfect for a shade tree guy like me 😎 Another HUGE bonus was, the builder was also a glass co’s field tech guy. They flew him all over to assist lay up (ton of infusion) for builders. When he spoke, I listened and remembered 😉 I remember kicking a 55 gl of resin to infuse one our 28’ vee hills and wondering about cost if it failed 😳 His employer would fly in customers crews to study our methods. Lived close enough that I rode my bike to work! The actual work sucked but was smart enough to know how lucky I was.

Get what your sayin, i wasnt implying a notch, it was just the thread and how he cut built and bonded it.
I was thinking along the same lines, cutting out a 4-6 foot long X "? width" v narrowing as it went forward. So the parts your laying up will essentially be strakes bonded close together at the bottom @ transom and taper down as they go forward Thereby making a flat or any angle pad you'd like. In theory by making extra pieces, you could lenghten / shorten your inner strakes to really dial in the boat similar to how the ben perfected boat bottom was done. Keep the pics coming |
