Got all the drive crap and cast iron chunk out of the boat.
Spent every spare dime and hr on the new shop and is the first chance Ive had to putz w/it since getting it home. Next projects will be pulling the tank to add capacity then draw up the design for the bracket/platform for the outboards. One headache on the tank is they put the fuel fill in the back so w/the boat in its normal bow up stance you can only get 45 or so gls into the 67 gl tank. Transom assembly is also out. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...74a5d3d475.jpghttps://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...15e9e772c1.jpghttps://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...524d9e9270.jpg |
Got a bit side tracked w/this thing.
Built it to hang on davits on the back of our cruiser which is....., for sale. Oops. 130 lbs and have a 35 hp I redid for it. May buy a trailer and use it as a jet ski. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1071d39862.jpghttps://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8150306b47.jpghttps://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c2992ae622.jpghttps://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5710b1dbca.jpghttps://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9f9ebba05b.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ea186c007c.jpg |
Minor headway.
Yesterday we closed on the sale of our cruiser though, and that was huge! Way easier to spend time/money on the Convincor w/the cruiser gone. Converted the trailer from dual fenders to singles which I reinforced to be able to use as steps. Also built the pod for the controls. Still need to wrap it in glass. Next is to pull the tank to add capacity and move the fill port to the front so I can actually fill the damn thing. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8ff55e4b28.jpg Reinforced w/pressure treated 5/4 deck plank https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b147d220d5.jpg new fenders https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a24dc56718.jpg orig fenders https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d89bb79df0.jpg new controls pod. just needs wrapped w/glass and paint |
I'm gonna be up in your neck of the woods this weekend. I could pick up that wooden boat and free up some space in your shop.https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...coolcowboy.gif

Very nice! It'll be perfect for my granddaughters and a hell of a lot better that a jet ski. They'll be the coolest kids on the lake tooling around in "Elvis"
|
Thx guys. let me know if you need any help setting up Kelly. I already hammered a bunch of cup into the wheel so it will hold at elevated engine heights and trim and should carry the bow nicely 😉 |
Will do bud. Thanks again. I’ll post pics of Elvis when I get him hung up in the cabin. |

Bracket for the Checkmate. 😎 |

Bracket for the Checkmate. 😎 For a car motor guy, that's pretty good 😉 Took my drawings to the local fab shop yesterday but they're not sure they can cut the half inch that I need for the motor board part. I have all the glass and may build one myself. |
Anybody with a plasma or laser could knock that out.

Main guy was out when I stopped in so still thinking good thoughts. Thx Kelly. |

Need to clean the paint up a bit after getting it too hot. Funny thing is, I had a 1/2 can of Rustoleum (was using as filler) in the shop that matches the boat almost perfectly. Sometimes it pays to be a redneck. |
Moving right along...........as long as you don't get sidetracked again.
|
Looks Awesome Gary. Keep thrashing, you'll get r done.

Necessity is the mother of invention...

Local fad shop sent me drawings today and said they can build the bracket. Yay! |

Yep, you're committed now, this should be good. I've had the same OSO signature here for a while now. (See below).:) |
My prop collection is coming together nicely. The open spots on the rack are for the mates to three individuals.https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...95a48cef27.jpg |
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...9dc6b4c4af.jpg Another HUGE part of the project will be "re-engineering" the cabin entry w/an opening hatch like the 24' Sonics had and every cuddly should have. Will also need steps to get to the bow for anchoring and handling bow lines. The 24' Sonics also had a wide enough side deck to walk around the windshield. |

Kinda cool how a stranger becomes family with the simple changing hands of boat. |
Way cool my brother!
I see she still thinks the speedo is the steering wheel :) Just talked to a friend yesterday, giving me **** for selling that ;) |
Kelly, Those grand kids are gorgeous, Thank God they look nothing like you!;)

More. Had a good day and got a bunch done. Removed the motor beds for the I/O (and for the Checkmate haters, were bone dry, rock solid, 32 yrs later), the floor to get to the tank out to enlarge it, which meant the seats and cabin bulkheads had to come out. The picture of the bilge, showing water in it, is what ran out of the saturated foam around the tank. There's only 1/4" around the tank but still full of water! A great discovery was 10" of foam forward of the tank which could be fuel tank! Orrrrrr, I cut it out, leave it open, and make it a step down to make it even easier for cabin entry.Hummmmhhhhhhhh? Only equals about 10 gls of fuel. Now it's getting fun 😉 |
I vote cabin entry..... I had a similar gap when I redid my fuel tank, but it was behind a structural bulkhead so I left it there (it’s good storage for shoes). Every time I hit my head going in and out of the cabin, I curse myself for not making use of it for entry. The only down side I can think of in giving up the flat cockpit floor would be losing the ability to safely/comfortably put a third person in between the bolsters while running. |
Agreed and great point about the third person. Another negative is when under way, remembering that opening is there and not stepping into it. I had a cuddly that way. I have a solution though which is to have a filler pc for it, while under way.

Glad to see you have some power. Your first sonic was a driving force in me getting my twin outboard Thoroughbred. Rock on Gary.
|
Thank you sir. Missin my roots and the style of boating they brought me.

Thats the good. The bad is its junk due to corrosion. Appears stainless bolster mount screws were too long and made contact w/tank causing galvanic corrosion. So far the stringers still look good. I have decided to make the bilge all fuel tank and should end up with 100 gls. Will go from cabin bulkhead to pad in bilge for bilge pump. The more I dig the more I am reminded as to my preference of re-rigging what I own. I am fearless in my boats in rough water when I have rigged them. In looking at the pump for the trim tabs I found massive corrosion on its mounting frame and solenoids, all hidden by its plastic housing. Little boats in big water MUST have good tabs. I lost a tab on my first 24' Sonic coming home through five footers in Lake Erie. That boat wouldnt stay on plane bellow 30 w/o tabs. That boat cant run 30 in 5's which meant the remainder of trip was made off plane, |
Looks like you're having as much fun as I am. That should be a nice setup when you're done.
|
Keep up the good work Gary it's worth it and very rewarding knowing you did it yourself.
|
Yep Something special to pull up to dock in one you built/rigged yourself. I have a very defined vision of the finished project and once I get there, I'm good.

Awesome stuff here! |
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b2dd00026.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5abea47e5.jpeg Got some me time today so did some piddiling. After much time in the bilge w/a tape measure and doing math, I’m a day away from having a 95 gl tank built. Up from the OEM 67. The stringers are only 24 1/2” apart so that’s width limit and I’m going from cabin bulkhead to about 12” forward of transom. About all I can get and still have from for bilge pump. While I’m filling I/o cut out I’m also repairing notch in sun lounge cross bar that a previous owner notched. It dropped a 1/2” and that’s w/o two fat/drunk people sitting on it! Decided to try an experiment and see if my shop vac would pull any water out of the flotation foam and luckily got nine. Yay. Being the skin flint that I am, I’ve decided to build my own bracket out of glass. Ordered two new jack plates today. |
