That's exactly how all of Gary's builds go and not only are they fun to watch, they're done first class. ;)

Gary, did you ever finish that 16 Whaler you were working on for a customer?

Lets see, on the pad, I will lay/fab up a 5.5" wide pad, approx 1/8" - 1/4" thick to whatever length makes sense. I'll then make jigs to hold it in place until the glue cures.
Then fill the edges/voids of the newly installed pad. Badda boom, badda bing.
Had one planned for the Sonic but w/its round keel (from its Donzi heritage) it would have been a PIA!
Attached a picture of the existing Convincor transom/bottom and its begging for a pad.

Safari, Ill read anything you can point me to on strakes. Had big plans for them on my last 24' Sonic but ran out of gray matter when time presented itself.

A while back I found a really good thread on here about them and spent most of one night reading it. It ended w/two of the knowledgeable contributors agreeing that it was as likely they were added to keep the Cubans from sliding off the molds while working on them as it was for performance ;)
Only here could you read 30 pages of input and end w/that :)

Jeff, we're close on the Whaler. I have a customer trying to figure out what he wants. I keep telling him its coming out too nice to cut corners now.
I want one w/a V-4 on it.
Cool lil tid bit is I was able to reuse all the ('1967) 52 yr old windshield glass and trim.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c3b8f93231.jpg

Got a bit of Gary time.

Lost track but I think...., two layers of 2 oz mat and four layers of 1708.
Or something close.

Cool thing was, laying up glass repays you for paying attention and I was reminded.
Rolled it over and over until content.
Im 25% of the way there and already it would take a whack from a 2 lb hammer.
Love working w/glass!

Jeff, thank you for your comments.
I had an epiphany w/the Sonic I did down there.
My head was so fried w/doing that boat outside, in Fla, the Mrs said, “let’s go to the Miami show and buy something.

I listened and we went both yrs I was doing that project.
Didnt find anything I’d be satisfied with.

Then it dawned on me.
Its the satisfaction of building it yourself that cant be replicated.

When I was young I dreamt of being able to write that check.
Then when I could, I chose not to as I thought it would not be the same.

Pixs attached of progress on the bracket and the section of my shop I’m going to enclose.
Always wanted a clean room for motor work and I think this is it.

When I installed the stereo in my new shop, I thought I was done and that it was now perfect.
Then the wife came out of the basement in the house, reminding me we had two unused TVs after our last move and wouldn’t I like to have one in the shop 🤓
I love that woman.

F-1 races and Browns and Gators football games in the shop next yr!

Just stumbled onto this shot of the sun lounge I built for my old Sonic.
Half the size of the one in the Convincor, bellow.

Planning on heading for Fla Mon AM to collect the motors and scooter.
Going solo and planning on a non stop, banzai run.

The tariff days, I remember how we were all pissed everyone else got the full 750's and we got 700's. But then again we also wish we could have got the two stroke 500's that Europe would get and all we got was the RZ350's, cool bikes but NOTHING like the 500's. That and the Canuc's could get them.

Yep, remember it well.
Funny too, I subscribe to a British bike mag and they have similar opions of that tarrif but are not as politically correct as you and I 😉

I lusted for an RZ 500 in that era.
$2700 for a gray market Canadian version.
Had the add on my tool box for yrs.
I could only afford this and bought it new in ‘85.

Never lost a street race.
Had a guy on a Suzuki GS 1100e that could not believe what it was.

If you laid on the tank and let her eat, you would see 130 @ 11k in 6th gear.
That was after some fiddling by me.

Home safe n sound but not w/o some tests.

A half hr north of Atlanta the idler pulley on my 1/4 million mile truck siezed and burned through the surpetine belt.
I learned that after it took out the power steering and I about drove into the door of the truck beside us.

We were lucky and made it to next exit and gas station there.
Belt took out alternator, water pump and power steering.

Used my phone and googled and found a local Napa store that after some whining, agreed to deliver parts to me in gas station parking lot.
I had us back on road 2 hrs after stop which blew me away.
We were VERY lucky.

Back on road and made it to Lexington Ky before stopping.
Awoke to snow next morning but hauled ass north w/no issues.

Well done Bud, Dude you are epic! ( PS You need a bigger truck )

Twin O/B Sonic 01-28-2019 08:09 PM

Thk you sir!

Told my brother we very lucky it didn’t happen going through Atlanta.
We’d probably just be getting home.

We’d have been back on the road in an hr had I diagnosed cause (seized idler pulley) instead of symptom (munched belt) so Napa driver brought both on first delivery 🤓

We had a lot of things go our way.
God was smiling on us 😉

So, 225 carbs mounted to the 200 so both motors are now 225’s.

Ordered the LH gear case today so next wk I will have a matching pair of counter rotating, ‘2000 225’s.

Sold the last of the I/O crap off the boat and am happy w/where I am $$.

Got the correct replacement lift shocks for the lounge lid so it now functions as it should.

Replacing the antiquated/OEM bow hatch w/a current era Bomar version and have a second, smaller one to add forward.

Struggling w/time to stay up w/glass work on the bracket but chipping away at it.
Got the upper reinforcements done and were small enough to be a pain in the ass.

Its not the repair manual you need but you should still have it.

Bow hatch reconfiguration.

Got to have two to flow proper like while staying on the boat.

The old/orig hatch was a PIA to operate and had been painted so allowed no light to cabin.
90% the wife is on hatch duty.
If it ain’t easy, and smooth, she won’t do it.

So main hatch is now quality Bomar/e-Bay unit and do is second, added hatch.

Another instance of rock solid, 34 yr old balsa core.

Say what you want about Checkmates but I ain’t found no rot yet.

Good job Gary. Nice work.... Keep it up Spring is coming really soon.

Twin O/B Sonic 03-02-2019 08:32 AM

Thx Cary.

I know on timing...
Im burning out but trying my old trick of switching tasks to keep it interesting.
As I sold of the I/O pts, I bought supplies for the project, to be installed later.

Im to the point on the bracket to where I need about 3 days of gonzo glass slinging. You have two days to overlay glass for it to be a chemical bond and not just mechanical as it would be after 2 days.
So I dont want to start until having a 3 day window and w/the weather, and having to keep the shop warm to cure the glass.

Treated myself to a break yesterday and titled/licensed my new from Fla scooter.
Being an out of state title t.fer it has to be inspected.
So I either strap it on a trailer and tow it there, or........ pull my old, expired ('2013) Fla bike tag off the wall of the shop and update it w/a marker.
I chose the latter.
Was a balmy 42* here yesterday!
Has been a buuuunnnnccchh of yrs since I dressed for cold weather riding.

What a hoot!

Can then do a hot spot on my phone to watch F-1 in 2 wks and my Gators this fall 🐊

Going to be ready for the Early Bird?

Twin O/B Sonic 03-05-2019 09:47 AM

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e0de2ddd8.jpeg
On early bird, via ferry maybe.

Like most of our projects, mine has grown way beyond the O/B conversion.
Have also done enough of these projects to know that once you put it in the water, you’ll never finish it.

So I’ll scarafice some season to finish the to-do list.

Heres a trick I did the on Sonic and loved, although not 48” like these.

W/the slides for the Bimini I can move it forward for shade of driver/co-pilot and to shelter cabin open when overnighting on boat.
Protects from rain and dew while allowing cabin door to be open for the mandatory ventilation.

Slide it back and get shelter/shade over bench seat and lounge.

Ill paint them to blend in before mounting them.

Very generous you should say that, reciprocal rights apply.
Our spare room may be a little small but I do airport runs and help arrange local activities, touristy things and stuff for visiting friends.

The U.S. is on my realistic bucket list.
