Highest quality boat build

Lets have a conversation about quality of craftsmanship. In your opinion, who makes the highest quality build? Is it Cigarette, with their classic lines? Outerlimits with their cutting edge hidden rigging? Nor-Tech? Who?

cowisl 03-29-2018 08:46 PM

Haha. AJ- your boat is gorgeous. Hope you are enjoying it.

Speedracer29 03-29-2018 08:58 PM

The floor recognizes the gentleman from Missouri with the cardboard bustle and F-14 canopies..... LMAO.

Speedracer29 03-29-2018 09:17 PM

AJ, love that Powerplay rigging!
Kevin at Progression does some nice rigging, and as a bonus, he numbers them.
Example of phone conversation:
Me: What does #43 do?
Kevin: Who is this?
Me: Ray with Joe’s old 24
Kevin: It controls (X)
Me: How do you know that?
Kevin: Because I built the boat.
Me: Yeah, like 3 decades ago.
Kevin: Aaaand? What’s your point? Call me back if I’m wrong. Talk to you next time .

I also like that EVERYTHING is through-bolted. Until I decide to take something apart. Then, notsomuch, because I usually need an extra set of hands.

Wiring is often a sore point in boats. Boat wiring in Thailand is usually copied from the domestic 220volt plan so you can see why I choose to import my boats from the U.S.

My 87 Top gun has great rigging especially for a 31 year old boat, nice and neat, everything works with no issues, the stringer system is built good and sealed properly resulting in a 31 year old boast with no rot, as far as brand new boats go, I am not sure whos the best but my buddy just built a new 52 Outerlimits and it looks perfect... all the Cigarettes look perfect aldso that I have seen. the worst wired boats I seen has been Baja, Formula and Scarab, huge mess...

Interceptor 03-30-2018 08:54 AM

Get comparable boat models 5, 10, 20, 30 years old that were run and maintained the same. Get a hole saw and you'll find out. The aircraft type wiring is nice but a dry hull is better.

sprsptr 03-30-2018 09:21 AM

Hey RR, That is some funny poop!

It is generally accepted that neat wiring is an indicator of quality rigging. I am not certain that is totally accurate. Wiring is something that anyone can asses with a visual inspection, so of course most manufacturers will do a neat install. Hull rigging that is improperly done will unfortunately be something discovered years after neat wiring has lost it's shine. I am admittedly partial, but there are lots of 20, 30, and 40 year old Cigarette's still running strong with minimal rigging or hull issues. I can not recall hearing horror stories with pictures of hull failures and such that have been attributed to poor quality rigging from this iconic manufacturer. Look at the efforts that Phil will put into a 10+ year old T/G restoration, and see how much it brings and how long it lasts in his classifieds. With the exception of Apache, few manufacturer's can claim the dedicated allegiance that owner's and enthusiasts have to Cigarette. Jury is still out on the newer manufacturers like O/L, Nortech, DCB, Progression etc, although most look to be rigged carefully and properly. Let's check in again in 20 years! As always, JMHO.

Knot 4 Me 03-30-2018 10:10 AM

Got a buddy with a 38 TG TS that just had to redo the deck due to multiple voids where the laminate was not properly rolled into curved surfaces, edges, corners, etc. Never would have thought that of Cig until I saw the pics. His quote was the "C Team" must have been in the layup shop that day. Any of the manufactures can have issues with so much manual labor involved.

AJ POWERPLAY 03-30-2018 11:22 AM

When i bought the boat from Robbie I got spme cut put samples of the transom, bulkheads, deck, and liner. I'll post some pics today or tomorrow.

***Disclaimer... this thread was started as a result of a lot of beer and THE 288 KID, lol. But I'll keep it up since people are actually posting pics of their own stuff which is cool

based on?

The wiring sucks
okder ones rotted easily due to foam and drilled holes never sealed
the hull to deck joint has been a huge problem in SR1 and Fas-techs

not a horrible boat but it’s very production, you should NEVERA HAVE TO SPLIT THE HULL AND DECK TO FIX IT.... ever

AllDodge 03-30-2018 01:03 PM

Stuff looks real good, but I would say the U.S. Navy rigs a boat clear enough for an 18 year old with a 9th grade education to find and fix..... but don't think All Ya'll be talking about those kinds of boats :D

I've been impressed with the wiring on my Formula... I have full wiring diagrams that came with the boat, and everything makes sense. That said it not as pretty as some of pictures in this thread...

you realize I sold 90% of what I had right? Again don’t. Comment if you don’t know what I’m doing.... i am not going to explain to you because you will hate no matter what, but I know what I did and how it worked, you can move on now.

As as far as the adult comments? Really your only comment to me was a chatty stab at me what I do, yet you know zero details about how it went, but I’m not being adult... ok

I dont care what you sold and how much money you made,
you bought 2 boats that you LOVED and started threads about them, what a great deal you got!but at the end you had to strip and sell them as parts because you did not inspected them correctly and later you found out they were too far gone,,hey but I dont blame you, $hit happens we all have gotten burned on a purchase we dont like it,but we move on.
BUT! you have the stones to come on here and talk $hit about Formulas,do you not think that theirs people on here that own Formulas?so maybe you should think and then type, because most people that lay down their hard earned money and buy a Formula do not want to hear your nonsense.

and No I do not own a Formula, and I have gotten burned on a wet boat purchased but I fixed it and moved on,but I certainly do not come here and pretend I walk on water.
so please give it rest,

Threads like these are destined to piss everyone off.

Everyone builds a nice new boat these days. And what do you mean "highest quality"? Can't really just say "build quality" Overall, structural, fit and finish, attention to detail, performance? And you can't really bring in stuff from the past because sh!t is getting unreal over the past few years. You see the over the top quality of the little westcoast companies lately? Stuff would blow your mind! If you haven't looked, do yourself a favor and peruse this thread Official 2018 Los Angeles Boat Show Report! River Daves Place. And these are not typical manufacturers that you'd associate immediately with the statement "highest quality boat". Cigarette, DCB, Skater, MTI, OL, Mystic, all at the top of their game and it definitely could be debated between these manufacturer's "who's the highest quality build". Threads like this are like going into a truck forum and asking, "which ones better, Ford, Chevy or Dodge?"

They're all bad azz bro. No one here is going to be disappointed walking in and buying a new high end boat. arguing what's better is kinda silly. Just my .02
