The V8’s were made to fill the void of the ailing 2 strokes in the bass boat / lighter hull market segment. The I6 is by far the most successful and bulletproof platform in Mercurys history. With the new sleevless & full die cast block, and the new SC that was introduced on the 350/400, the range for HP on the I6 will be quite impressive. Keep in mind the 400 is THE most successful product ever made by Merc, so dont expect it to go away anytime soon.

And Merc upped the warranty on the 400s to 3 years this year. Another indication they are happy with how it is holding up.

THE most successful product? That’s a pretty bold statement, any facts to back that up?

Regardless, you can stick a fork in the 400R, it’s done. Mercury has a whole line of lighter, more powerful products in the works based off the new design.

Yep, Steve Miller, Mercs OB Market Manager stated this in a press release over a year ago, look it up.

The lighter more powerful products are based off of the new redesigned, full cast, sleevless I6 block. Which will be much lighter than the current design. The new water cooled supercharger will be brought over from the current platform. PPAP’s have already been run on the new block, water testing is currently happening in Dubai.

While the new engines perform great and look good, they just seem too big for many applications.

What are formula 1 going to run in the future?

Anything to replace the old 12” and 15” midsections?

bumping it from 2.6 to 3.5 liters is all it needed. I6 with seven mains and one rod/crank throw per cyl is an insanely strong design look at all the big diesels

Just hope Merc comes out with a higher hp version of the new V8 at the Miami show like everyone is saying. Supercharged or whatever... I don't want the heavy straight six. The new VIDEO is awesome all the way around.

Cary 29 12-15-2018 10:28 AM

The new V8 not video sorry

the new full cast I6 will be much lighter than the current design. Plus, it will be sleevless as well, further reducing the weight. I would also expect a similar above water exhaust as is on the ROS.

So you think they will tweak the 6 rather than up the power of the new v8 platform?

xb03fs 12-16-2018 09:52 PM

Be nice to get a 15” mid option on the v8s

Is a sleeveless block able to be bored ?

No, the liners are sprayed in, similar to the process that Merc is using on the V8’s.

Yes this seems to be the plan. This has been a bullet proof platform for Merc, and the 350 & 400 are the only I6 models offering the new water cooled SC and redesigned induction system, so I would expect to see this on the redesigned larger displacement block.

So you mean a larger displacement six cylinder...

Yes it will be, and it will be much lighter since it will be a full cast block.

I live in Oshkosh, Mercury tests in front of my house, in Miami, 450 super charged V-8

I have no clue what Mercury are planning but with all the different ideas on this thread, and some of you guys sound pretty sure, it will be interesting to see who is right and who is wrong. :)

I believe you but curious how you can tell, I doubt they are doing testing with decals on the motors are they?

Merc was going to lose global mkt share if they didnt do away with the Opti’s, due to the ban on 2 strokes in larger to most of Europe. The V8’s will need many more miles to be put on them before you can expect a large increase in HP from this new platform. If you study the evolution of the I6 Verado, it took Merc over 10 years to get from the initial HP offering to where they are now. Expect at least that from the new V8’s before any major HP increases. The ROS I6 is reportedly running a sleeveless full cast block in the current displacement thats being offered for sale now. The bored out version is being tested in the Dubai region of the world.

Skater30 12-27-2018 12:15 AM

Everything I've heard is SCV8, 450HP is what we'll see at MIBS in February. I don't even care any more though, as I don't plan to sell my '18 400Rs with 22 hours on them to repower for an extra 50HP aside.
