It still won't be the same Joe, just like motocross/supercross isn't the same as it was in the 2 stroke days. There's nothing like the sound/smell of high rpm, racing 2 stroke engines! It doesn't effect any of us here in the U.S. anyways, as I doubt we'll ever see any of these motors - they'll only be on the F1 boats over across the pond. Maybe Shaun will post on here to tell us of Mercury's plans for these new engines. It would be awesome to see our Champ Boat Series return here in the U.S. as a result of these new motors, but I highly doubt that is going to happen.

RyW 09-15-2020 04:45 PM

They have the motors over driven to 9600rpm prop speed too!

The Seattle Kingdome full of blue smoke with McGrath battling Emig and Ryno...... heaven. But I am a fan of the new 4stroke outboards just to keep this thread on track.

I agree with you on both counts........but if I'm going to be standing on shore watching an F1 race, give me the pissed-off sound of a bunch of 2 strokes screaming over the low howl of small displacement 4 strokes turning less rpm.

Raceline video on these on Youtube. And they mention with the torque they produce it allowed them to over drive the lower to maintain propshaft speed.
But otherwise I'm with the You MFr's need 2 strokes crowd.

NWfreerider 09-16-2020 09:33 AM

The pitch of a 2.5 will never be replaced. My old 28 Skater originally had them and they sounded amazing.

Have you heard these new 4 strokes? The new 360 ROS has open exhaust. I hardly call 4.6L a small 4 stroke. Even Nascar uses small block 5.8L and listen how they sound. I have been a fan of the Mercury two stroke for a very long time. What I am not a fan of is the smoke, the very high maintenance and adding oil all the time. I am one person who is glad the two stroke if done. Look what the new Mercury O/B's have done for the boat industry. O/B cat and CC's are all the rage now because of these new engines.

two strokes were the coolest engines ever. Look at motorcycles. The 500 gp bikes were the coolest
so merc is using a 4.6L to replace a 2.5L 2t. Weak af. It’s a race boat they are supposed to be high maint

Would be nice if we can put a 450R powerhead on this 400 ROS motor

The prop-speed of the older motors is matched on the new V8 motor by using 4 interchangeable "overdrive" gearsets.

There’s got to be 4’ of motor above the deck of that boat! Pretty soon you won’t need the boat, they’ll just put seats And rod holders on the motor itself. Lol

Hi!

Does anyone know real HP for

VRod 400 comsumer model (2020)
Vrod 400R
Merc 450R

I hear that NorTech has experienced loss in speed with the new Vrod 400 over the Vrod 400R.

Thanks :)

Excuse my ignorance but what is the advantage of a twin 400hp outboard vs twin 400 hp I/O. With that mild power engine shouldn't engine life, performance and maintenance be similar. I dont understand outboards for everything?

The new OB engines are designed with much newer/better technology. Your old 502 mpi had pushrod valve train instead of a overhead cam system is just one of the 100's of major differences between the two. Your not going to see your 502 mpi last 2000 hrs yet the outboards are doing that.

.... and they're running at all rpm's in low decibels and sipping fuel vs. the I/o counterparts.

The big o/b's are in the 2010's (to date) what the 525 was just prior to the Outboard domination trend took off in the boating market,

I wouldn't say the 525 was, that thing is still based on the replacement for the W motor of the early 60's.

The LS based motors are at least closer but no one uses them in a performance boat.

That said the new 300R at 4.6 Liter and 300HP has to be one under stressed motor. But at the price tags of these things they should be reliable, just wish there were more performance V's being built.

speicher lane 11-24-2020 10:29 AM

I was just referring to the period of time when the market trend was to have the 525 blue motor otherwise it was considered not enough power to envy or you needed to be on a first name basis with your mechanic as you were breaking parts and/or drives.

No different than a merc blue engine will resell a boat faster than alternative brands - its the perception of being more reliable until the next trend in superior technology spanks the Verado.

MPIs can last a long time. Not a ton of outboards doing 2k hrs that I’ve seen. Unless it’s a daily type of operation. Pleasure boaters roll the hours up slower.

hogie roll 11-24-2020 12:04 PM

I will say my 454 MPIs sound 10x better than my Suzuki V6s. The OBs are quiet at low speed though. I hope Mercs V8s sound better, I’d like to have a set but need to see what reputation they get first.

The regular 400 verado only comes with the 5.44 HD gearcase and makes slightly less power with a lower RPM range, 6,800.
