BTW the 400 Verados dont make 400hp:)

If you study the evolution of the I6 Verado, it took Merc over 10 years to get from the initial HP offering to where they are now. Expect at least that from the new V8’s before any major HP increases. The ROS I6 is reportedly running a sleeveless full cast block in the current displacement thats being offered for sale now. The bored out version is being tested in the Dubai region of the world.

You can reprogram the 400s to 450. No reason to swap engines.

I’m wondering what mercs plan is to unseat seven marine as the big outboard Hp king

bmedfo1 12-28-2018 11:13 AM

I think it’s a different market. Price and weight are not even close. Have never seen th 7s on any fast cats

i wonder why. Weight wise it’s a lot less than a bbc trans and 6/8 or asd. Price isn’t too steep when looking at buying the afore mentioned stuff

NWfreerider 12-28-2018 06:54 PM

The 7Marine engines do not have a lower unit designed for speeds over 80 MPH. Also, 7Marine does not have a dealer network even close to Merc so parts and service would be a nightmare.

didnt evinrude buy 7 marine They have the technology for a slipperier lower unit of bobs doesn’t have one. And parts and service won’t be a problem

Hey Noli. I need to know the width of these 450 v8s. Can you find out?

I'll get on it David. The optional external tie-bar bracket might increase overall width, we'll see

please don't forget your friends when your 280's go up for sale :)

That would be a LOT of weight hanging off the transom David, those motors weigh 720#s apiece. Add brackets and tie-bars, and you'd have about as much weight as a pair of BBC/6 drives back there, but hanging off the back of the transom rather than in the boat. I can only imagine the handling issues you would face having the CG that far rearward, plus dragging a pair of those big 5.44" gearcases through the water coming through the tunnel. And you know you could convert the boat to inboards with brand new #6 drives and motors for the same price as quad 450Rs. I've always been a fan of what you've done with the quad 2.5s, but I think you'd be much happier with a pair, or even triple 450Rs rather than quads 450Rs. I've been out in Matt Rice's old 368 w/400Rs (my buddy now owns it) and I was very impressed with how well it ran. I think you'd be really happy with a pair of the 450Rs on your beautiful 36!

They have been turning faster lap times in testing then the 2.5s, run on pump fuel, and should last for a full race season without being torn down. Very impressive-
