Fountain vs. Cigarette
who builds the better offshore pleasure boat?
|
common, were well overdue for a good battle. Any takers:D :D :D
|
You buyn a new boat?? I think maybe Cigarette, more time behind them. Plus if you buy a fountain, you will need to buy a new jacket :D
|
Give me a break
|
no hyper not yet but I want to see what everyone else thinks:p
|
i've always liked the fountains looks and perf. but trusted cigs. strength and reliability.

Offshore & Pleasure = Cig:)

Offshore & Pleasure & fast = Fountain
|
Originally posted by later Offshore & Pleasure & fast = Fountain I have a great respect for Fountain. Very fast boats. My friends that have been spending more time in Florida are trading their Fountains. One is looking hard at a Cig, the other an Outerlimits. Just going by what they tell me. Mark |

i had to throw that in to stir the pot! in all honesty i think depending on were you do your boating, has a big bearing on the different boats. while i really like my fountain i do like the looks of the classic offshore boats, cigs, apaches, and think that they all build a great boat, if i boated in the ocean i probably would go for a little more weight and higher freeboard. one undesputable fact is, fountains are efficient with their hulls.

Depends on what you mean by better?
Better for budget? fountain Better for cabin room & amenities? fountain (at least with most of (well, ALL that I have seen, but I'll say most) the new Cigs coming with Covergirl cabins) Sounds wierd to say Fountain wins on the cabin space. LOL! Better hull for speed? Fountain pre 00 twin step Cig, then it's a tough one (and Cig owners will argue true boat length, but when you're running WOT, none of the front of the boat is in the water anyway.) Better hull for ride? Cig Better wow factor? I think Cig gets the looks more than a fountain They are both great boats, just depends on what you use them for. I can tell you my thoughts, though. I always thought "I want one" about Cigs, but know I would want a TS version for the speed. After shopping and not being able to sit up on the cabin couches without hitting my head, or no enclosed potty (and haven't seen a full cabin since 99-00), it's not the boat for me. If I didn't need usable cabin room , I'd buy a Skater:D:D:D If I was out in 5'ers plus all the time and didn't need a lot of cabin room, it's probably the best boat to own, though. I think a Cig owner leads a lonely life. When it's flat, the Fountains rule, when it gets rough, Cig owners rule, but they can't find anyone else to run in the big water but other Cig owners. LOL! Just kiddin guys:) Mark |
Well I had the chance to drive a brand new 35 fountain this past weekend with 500 EFI's...I am not trying to flame anybody here but I was not impressed with the boat at all (and neither were the other people on the boat with me).
The boat was fast, we were able to get 84 out of it with full tanks and four people on board but the handling sucked. The water was flat, no chop at all and a very small swell. If you tried to run the boat tabs up in chine walked very badly over 75 mph. Everybody in the boat, myself included wondered what it would be like in rough water. For a lake boat it would be fine, but I think for the ocean I would stay with my Cig. As far as cabin and amenities is concerned the boat was very small for a 35' boat, and was very production looking. For 200k I would expect a little more. My top gun with the Cover Girl cabin was much larger. I know I am comparing a 38' boat to a 35' but it seemed like much more difference than 3'. Just my opinion but I expected a little more. The speed was good though for the weight we had on board, but my TS Top Gun will run 80 with the same power and full of fuel. |

There both over-rated!:D ;)

cig, hello:rolleyes:

Both boats have their strong points. Do you have any experience in a non-step 38 TG? Which is the best rough water boat? Dan |

I have owned both, two Cigs and 1 Fountain
The Cig has much better rigging and attention to detail. In the Fountain the only really comfortable position I could find for driving was sitting down, I whish they would make the bolsters taller. In rough water there is no comparison the Cig will always run faster and ride better. In flat water along with better speed the Fountain turns much better. I have heard many issues recently with warranty work and factory support on newer Fountains. I always got great support from Cigarette! |
You are right about Cig owners being lonely.
Everytime it kicks up on Erie........No Fountains to be seen ! When it is flat they are like flies......:D If you want flat & fast, there are better choices......... If you dont want to hide when it kicks up....Cigs & their cousins rule.....{These are called OFFSHORE boats..Ya Know !} |
There are some interesting insights from people that have owned or ridden in both. Since I've never owned a Cig (that will change someday) or Fountain I can only go by what is said in threads like this. WHY does a Fountain not ride in the rough as well as a cig? Is the Fountain a more bone jarring ride, does it lose stability, does it not fly level, does it not turn as well, lousy center of gravity, etc????? Don't they both have 24 deg bottoms? Is it the entry angle of the Cig that makes it better, or does weight come into play???
|
Well, when you pay top dollars for a 35 or 38 foot boat, do you want a 35 or 38 foot boat.......or a 32 /35 footer?:D :D :D Personally I think Fountain had faster hulls a few years back due to new technology but Cig is up to date now. I would pick the Cig any day.......sorry Mike.:p Dave Warden

Obviously both boats are high quality boats, and both have strong points. The cigerette is with out a doubt, a more custom boat. the attention to detail is a little better. The cigerettes are excellent rough water boats, but the the fountains are good rough water performers as well. Cleavland 2001. The water was snotty and rough at best. Winner, 35 fountain. In flat water, there is no doubt that the 35 ts fountin is the fastest offshore v-hull out there right now. the 36 cigerette is a fast boat as well, but it is out ran in the corners, and it is a little slower in the straight. the fountain is an extremely capable boat, and i feel that they do not get enough credit on this board.as a pleasure boat, they are both great boats. in the end i would go with a gigerette, but the fountain will remain ym choice for a race machine.

Indy...Part of it is the weight...Cigs are Heavy...Also Fountain uses a "Pad".....Flat bottom at stern of boat....Faster but harder landings....I have not been on a Fountain for many years but..
The build quality and detail did not compare to Cigs in the past. I dont know about now.....I wont even get into "steps" :D |
CIG VS. FOUNTAIN
If you own a Cigarette when you die, you get to spend eternity with Don Aronow. If you own a Fountain, you MUST spend it with Reggie.
|
Birdog...thanks for the reply, weight is a factor. As far as the pad goes, how does that affect the BOAT, not the driver/passengers. I understand that the pad will make for harder landings which is more uncomfortable for the people, but how does that affect rough water performance? I'm trying to ascertain why the Cig is better in rough conditions. Both the Fountains and current Cigs have steps, so that is a wash.
|
I see "Brownie" is on here now......I will bow to his superior knowledge on this subject........:D
|
I have never had the pleasure to ride in a Fountain but one thing that I can add to this is a Cigarette will hold a higher resale value.

TOP GUN, CAFE', BULLET
I was the Director of Product Development at Cigarette for the Top Gun , Cafe' and the Bullet. In 1985, 6, 7, we thought that those boats were the most advanced, best built on the planet. Noone ever said, do it this way and save a buck! Even after all these years, they still hold up well against the glare of newer competition. We used to have a book on the coffee table in Mr. Gowens' office, called"The Quintessence of being it" Rolex is "it". Harley is "it", Ferrari is "it". Snap-on is ""it". Cigarette is "it". Fountain AIN"T.

The less you have to concern yourself with staying in the boat and in one piece the faster you can run it. |

It always amazes me how Fountain is the boat that is most often comparied too.
I dont think that there is a ideal boat, there all a matter of style and taste difference. while i love the looks of my fountain i also love the looks of the classic's and hope to own one in the future. before i purchased my first fountain I looked at many classic V's cig, formula, scarabs, i kept going back to the fountains because they provided me with more than flat out high speed performance, such as cruise effencience, cruise comfort,( i like to have the option to sit if i choice ) with reasonable good rough water capabilities, styling, and good resale value. Hail to BROWNIE, well said:D :p :D
