Default The Captain Magazine fans...

Pretty much right off the bat The Captain Magazine in Australia became a mega-hit. With a straight shooter approach, the publishers have shown what kind of offshore boats and gear fishing and diving guys/gals value best. Australia/New Zealand have serious stretches of varying waterways and they don't shy away from challenging nature. As You know, early on several individuals 'Down Under' cut deals in the 60's with American guys like Don Aronow and Dick Bertram to get the rights to manufacture under license some of the boat models that had launched their respective careers. Many AU Bertram 20, 25, 26 and 28 were made 'down there' and Don Aronow's Formula 233 and smaller models were big sellers. The 'weekly' or so released videos and their blog of articles have already accumulated into a little bit of a treasure trove. So if You haven't checked 'The Captain' out, I suggest You do. Much of the way they boat and fish make me nostalgic, but in a very good way. The boating industry in Australia and New Zealand have treasured the legendary performance boat designs, fine-tuned and evolved them a little bit and incorporated some of the latest technologies available to even be able to play when the sea puts up a formidable fight. The 'good ol' days' are still alive and well 'Down Under'. Look forward to Your thoughts on this media mates.

The Haines family and especially the late scion thereof, John Sydney Haines AM 1937-2009, made a big contribution to the American influence on boat manufacturing 'Downunder'. The Haines Brothers in 1965-1967 raced, among other boats, a twin Merc. powered, cut-down Bertram 20 moppie that they named their V19 model. John obtained licenses from both Dick Bertram and Don Aronow to manufacture their boats. Today John Jr. runs The Haines Group and manufacture a couple of boat brands. His latest creation, the Haines Signature 788SF, was tested by The Captain Magazine and will be a halo model for sure. Some history first.

Thanks for posting, some good Aussie stuff, I'll have a better read when I have more time.

I grew up in the era of John Haines, the Spooner family, who to this day still own Caribbean (formerly Bertram in Aus) and many others. I watched racers like Peter Dean in 'Slingshot', Barry Macmillan, 'Whippy's Eagle', Tony 'Silver' Lowe in his Harris Cats and many more, hold off competition from local and overseas racers in Port Phillip Bay several times.

On the fishing side, one name mentioned stands out - Cam Strachan. There's a character right there. Crocodile Dundee goes fishing! Some of the tales that surround him are great. He was pretty well known as an abalone 'poacher' which got him in strife from time to time. I recall hearing one story how he was followed by police helicopter, in his twin diesel cat out into Bass Strait. 30-40 miles then drifted for a couple hours with the chopper overhead until it eventually returned to land, presumably for fuel, then Cam returned to land with his haul but a different port from where he left. Probably had a few beers along the way!

Yes rak rua, Cam Strachan is one of a kind. Waiting for him to finish his latest creation, the CamCraft 8.0M, 30 degrees at the transom and a 550 hp Mercury 6.7 FPT TD with Arneson drive!

Old legendary boats 1st and 2nd. 8.0M in two smaller images below.
