525 Coolant Change
Drained most if not all fluid out of closed cooling on my 525 EFI. A couple questions: Should I use the 50/50 diluted Dex Cool to refill or mix my own concentrate with distilled water at a higher antifreeze amount? Live in Chicago area so it can get really cold in winter.
Next, what is the best way to refill the system? Just keep pouring into overflow tank? Not exactly sure how much fluid came out of block.
Thanks

have all the service manuals - engine serial is the most important item one can post to get the proper info and the proper produres. The 496 has 2 different capacities for coolant. and that all goes by engine serial number.
also for all batteries and all close cooling refills --- DISTILLED WATER IS NEEDED in the mix. Do not use tap water. tip number 1

Engine is a 525 with serial number 91004981. Would like to finish putting it together today or tomorrow and use it for the weekend but I do not want to trap air in the block if that’s an issue. Thanks for any and all help.

I know that goes without saying for batteries, just was not aware that it was called for in the 525.

Sorry met to say 525 not 496 - kind of worn azz out today and the capacity for AF is 19 qts thru out all serial numbers hp 525. Thats the full capacity .
DISTILLED WATER for all close cooling systems and even for autos - TAP water leaves mineral deposits in the heat exchangers and auto / car / truck / rads as well

Not familiar with the 525 heat exchanger but would imagine there is a fill on it. I added a closed system on my 502. As others stated , distilled water only if you are going to mix your own. The pre mixed would suffice beings a lot of cars are using it. I found it is easiest to top off the system through the heat exchanger as much as possible then hook up your water supply and start the engine. The water pump will start circulating coolant and you will be able to add more coolant to the heat exchanger as the block fills. Once it levels out , put the cap back on to allow it to pressurize and then add into the overflow tank. It’s going to take a few outings to get it completely filled so you will notice your overflow tank a little low . Just continue to fill to it’s line and you will be good to go.
