I was using auto pilot on day one of having our Nortech CC and Monterey cabin cruiser and at night. Both boats do have FLIR and radar, which makes it easier. It would still be very easy to have this happen on auto pilot if you were not paying attention.

Depends on how he set it up. If he had it just on heading lock, it would just hold the boat straight, until the operator took control. If he made his own route to follow, he may have made it right through the jetty. If he had auto route, I would think it would have routed around this, but it is not 100%. Anytime I use auto route, I check it to make sure. Either way, if you don't pay attention during auto pilot, you are at risk of hitting something/ someone.

I know auto route on my Garmin Chartplotter is not error free by any stretch.

I hate to hijack this thread, but anytime I use auto route on my Garmin - it takes me across land. Is that normal?? Granted, I've never opened the book/manual, but it's not very intuitive.

I would be interested in the boat now for the right price. Most of that should buff out.

It was embedded in the article which went on to say only ONE other boat hit that jetty in the previous 10 years. Lot's of OSO members have used that inlet so they are familiar with it.
