Funny cause I heard that marketing is pretty much what made the 400r take off sorta unexpectedly. It's not drastically different than a 350verado and it doesn't even make the full 400hp....but most people wont know any of that.

Question is how do you replace the verado 400R and even harder without the price tag of the 450r? But hey people are buying them so maybe price doesn't matter anymore.....
The 450R or 500R model could be brought down in price some with higher volume and cover the crowd that wants the biggest engine

When I owned a 350 Sci I managed 81-82 mph with a Rev4 25 pitch. With the 400R I got 86 mph. So thats not bad with 50 hp. Even better if its less hp.

I think most of the gain was due to less drag from the lower unit.

But the real speed gain came with a Max5 25 where I got 89 mph.

Anyone who thinks Mercury will not make a 350 and a 400 V8 package once they decide to stop Verado production only needs to look at how many HP levels and performance levels the 3.0L V6 2 strokes were available in.
