Crazy cold

Every time I check the radar lately it looks like this.
I’ve never been in cold weather like what’s in the Mid West right now, do these conditions severely
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6356626a0.jpeg
hamper your daily routines?
I’ve spent a few days at a time in North Idaho in winter and everyone carried on as usual, but it wasn’t nearly this cold, just snowy.
Also, when can you normally expect to comfortably get out on the water in the spring?
Trailering up to Lake Michigan for a couple weeks is on my bucket list for summer ‘22.

Quinlan 02-16-2021 06:13 AM

Crazy here. We are pushing the all time low which is -13 and we are -9. Also pushing toward all time longest under freezing which is 13 (1983) days in a row. We are 9 and counting- not forecasting above until maybe Saturday. Now they are talking Rolling Black outs- Idiots- Solar- Yea that's the answer lol.
I actually winterized the Fino this yr. First time in about 10 yrs for the Slo Boat.
Talking 50's next week-:party-smiley-020: Damn Ground Hog- Somebody needs to Eat his aZz lol

12 degree here in central Louisiana. Ive never seen it like this before. I dont see how you yanks do it... I went out last night to let the dogs potty and my left nut stuck to my leg. I had to get my wife to blow on it so it would thaw out...

F-2 Speedy 02-16-2021 08:23 AM

-15 here with mandatory rolling back outs because the power grid is being stressed to the max, and it looks like we have a few more days to go

No sweat for us.

Maybe now you southern guys understand why we northern melt and hide in high 80’s and above. My favorite temp to work in is low 60’s and sun. Totally comfortable working outside from say 15*f + with no gloves if no wind.

Most people have electric heat instead of gas? Why is the power grid stressed?

I like the snow and cold . Great for business too.

This is from our power Co

.Due to extreme frigid weather, energy use is much higher than normal, which is increasing demand on our power grid. Over the next few days, we've been asked to implement controlled, temporary emergency electricity reductions during certain times of the day in order to help avoid larger uncontrolled and extended power outages throughout the region.

To limit emergency electricity reductions and outages, we're asking all customers to cut back on electricity usage until conditions improve.
Get the latest news and updates on Facebook and Twitter
https://ecp.yusercontent.com/mail?ur...0UPqb32KpQ--~D Every little bit helps us (and you) conserve energy and prevent outages. Here are just some ways you can help cut back:

https://ecp.yusercontent.com/mail?ur...Q4sglpT_BA--~D Turn off lights and appliances not in use

https://ecp.yusercontent.com/mail?ur...AflxUgRPCw--~D Turn your thermostat down a few degrees (65-68 degrees) and avoid using electric space heaters

https://ecp.yusercontent.com/mail?ur...0UnWEP88hQ--~D Avoid using large appliances (clothes washers, dryers and dishwashers). If you must, delay use until between 10 pm and 5 am

The rolling black outs are due to the Southwest Power Pool's reliance on wind farms, mainly in Texas and Oklahoma that have frozen up due to the cold.

snapmorgan 02-16-2021 08:55 AM

Coal, oil and gas are looking pretty good right now when the wind turbines are frozen in place and the solar panels are buried under a foot of snow. 85 here yesterday and calling for 80 today. That is the main reason that I moved from Indiana.

OH $hitt AOC says, guess we forgot about that! screw them she has NG fired furnace in NY so what does she care,, All Gore same thing Ill bet he is nice and warm using oil based heat! Whaterver..

So I bought a Propane fired whole house generator that comes on automatic when power goes out.. Best investment for us!

AllDodge 02-16-2021 09:10 AM

Research folks, research.
According to Texas news outlets its the same issue it was the last time it happened the last time there was a cold snap. Texas didn't winterize the generators because they are not required to and because it cost money to do so. (It never freezes in Texas) So they are now trying to winterize the plants so they can get them up and going

Lightweight
1 deg and 8 inches on drive. Better than the Mega Gym.

And automakers are saying they are going all EV in the next few years. Hmmm, not with the current power grid!

Eddienel 02-16-2021 09:32 AM

They are threatening to cut power off in certain areas here because of the grid. Ive got gas heat so Im good. This is definitely new for us and now they are calling for 100% chance of rain/sleet tomorrow but a high of 34. Not quite sure what thats going to do with the 4 or 5 inches of slow/ice we already have.

Canuck B Crazy 02-16-2021 09:39 AM

Its been cold here near Vancouver the past week. Dipped to 22F with snow. Its now 32F and light ice rain. Snow is a slushy mess. Its usually 40F and half decent here this time of year.

thirdchildhood 02-16-2021 10:02 AM

In Michigan we are paying for the mild December and January that we had. Lots of snow, lots of cold! My family lives in Anchorage, Alaska where they are not much worse off then we are this time of year but whenever I get depressed I look at the 10 day forecast for Fairbanks where things can get real interesting!

Relatives in Cypress/Katy text me and said was 28 in the house. No power since yesterday. Crazy.

About those wind farms and solar panels , hows that working out for the green energy babies... Can't sit in that Tesla either cause that B1tch is dead...lol....

Taboma 02-16-2021 11:03 AM

Eddie,^^, Not so fast on the "natural gas, I'm good" comment. Reports are that natural gas well heads in OK and TX are freezing up, so no gas flowing and fears of residential service shutdowns.
That will result in the gas utility to physically go to each residence before resuming service.
That might take a day or two!!!!

1960brookwood 02-16-2021 11:06 AM

How much you want to bet there will be a lot of shops really busy in the coming weeks--and perhaps a shortage of Marine motors?

the deep 02-16-2021 11:11 AM

I've long planned for a long duration grid down event no matter the cause. During winter we have three separate sources of heat that require no electricity. A hard coal (anthracite) burner that is gravity fed thus requiring no power, a propane gas fireplace along with a wall mounted brick heater and in reserve a wood burner. All three can also be used for cooking. Yep, I'm one of those tinfoilers that libs love to hate. A person could freeze to death waiting for the Gubment to save them. Call me prepared and self reliant. Hope I've provoked some thought.

waybomb 02-16-2021 11:32 AM

I saw that spot electric was up to the max of $9,000/mwh in Texas for a bit.

Drake22.250 02-16-2021 11:54 AM

Need more of those ugly ass wind farms, just put a whole line 4 miles from my farm. Another great idea.

I can hear the disclaimer already.... "No spotted owls were harmed in the removal of said trees."

Libs just cant figure it out, what they want and try to drive up our asses makes no sense in the real world. Just wait till they get their next electric bill....

Just another winter up here in WI. Think we got up to 17 today, so that was nice.

You will probably will find that you only have heat while the hydro power is on...unless it's an old standing pilot propane type unit

Propane gas logs. So far so good. They cut power south of us for almost 2 hours.

When do you typically get out on the water?
Late May or so?
