Anybody been passed by JetSki?
I took the nephew out for his first time in my POS. It was a beauty day, nice and warm, really calm, maybe a consistent 4" roller. Anyway, we were cruising along at about 60, when a Waverunner creeps up beside us. Seeing as I had my nephew with me, I was forced to put some distance between us and the lake lice. After opening the exhaust to let them breath, I pushed the sticks to the stops with confidence, believing the pest would be a blue speck in our prop wash. So I look over my shoulder to verify that I can back off the throttles, only to be shocked to see it actually gaining on us. At that point I was really glad I had just installed trim switches on the sticks that morning. I trimmed it out so there couldn't have been much gel still touching the water. Thankfully we managed to pull ahead of it, but not by much. The speedo is on the passenger side and he swears he saw 90, probably high 80's, but who knew Tyler Crockett, or at least a close retaliative was up in Ontario on a PWC!

Alright, just stop it right there.... Just stop talking about wave runners.
70MPH on glass. PERIOD You wont see any of these clowns hauling azz on the way home from tie-up cove because they cant run more than 20MPH in 6 INCH swells. They are stupid for anything more than a 5 minute joyride. Case closed. :) WaveRunner = Unicycle = Tits on bull = Useless |

Case closed. :) WaveRunner = Unicycle = Tits on bull = Useless I would love to have a fast jet-ski/wave runner as well as a fast bass boat, a fast V- bottom, flat-bottom ski-boat (Hondo or classic Sanger), a fast CAT, a fast pontoon boat, you get my point, anything on water that goes fast, even a Hobie cat sailboat and a small sunfish sailboat for a small pond (keep in mind I am not a sailboat enthusiast, at all). To use a phrase from Ricky Bobby, "I Just Wanna Go Fast!" ; and no, I was never passed by a jet ski (in the past, I am boat-less at present). I am daydreaming again on going fast! I would like own an 80 + mph Wave Runner would be cool, but I am not spending my money on that at this time, and probably never. |
I've got two Sea Doos, both run in the high 50s - low 60s range and that is plenty fast for me. They are fun in their own right, and they make for a nice "get on the water" experience when I can't get on the boat. The lake I take them to tends to get very rough with a typical Kansas south wind, and 2' - 3' rollers are pretty common and yeah...not so much fun getting your balls slammed into your tonsils, lol! Luckily there are some nice coves where one can get out of the worst of it.
As mentioned, there are some STUPID fast modified PWCs out there, but even the stock ones, the high performance ones have ~300 hp and hit 60 in something stupid like 2.5 seconds...FEROCIOUS acceleration that frankly, would be a BLAST! |

The bigger the water the more I enjoy it. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...859f46a156.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b400a13871.jpg |
My painter and I took his 1200's (70 mph) out on Lake Michigan for a lunch run from GH to Muskegon. (13 miles each way) It was a blast. The lake was fairly calm, but there were a ton of boat wakes to make it challenging. I was never a fan of them until that day.

I used to… then I bought an Outerlimits:evilb:

I can see how someone who has never had the chance to ride one would look down their nose at someone on a jetski but most people who have had an opportunity enjoy them for what they are realize they are a kick in the pants.Poking around some new shoreline, jumping wakes, 70mph speed runs with your feet 12" from the water all for less than the price of a replacement long block.
Just like a bass boat won't work for hauling building materials in rural Alaska a 50' offshore boat doesn't work for everyone one and I'm certainly not the gatekeeper on who gets to have fun on the water. don't forget the "lake lice" pay boat taxes that support the parks and ramps we all use. One hat doesn't fit all heads |
I have the 300 Limited SeaDoo- You can put it on extreme(or something) and it will damn near pull your arms out of the sockets lol.
Has cooler mount in back and a built in blu tooth tunes. Hate to say it but I put Way more hours on it then my other 2 boats. BUT like said- the Ciggy is WAY more fun in Big water.:bananalove: https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...811d36f0d3.jpg |
Most probably could agree jet skis are hated because of the drivers that don’t pay attention.
They come out of nowhere and will be riding right at your transom and you not even know it. Last weekend at my narrow lake, I passed a pontoon crossing the lake. I was in the center so I could miss it. At the same time, a jet ski started heading towards me. They swerved both ways while I committed to swerving one way. I ended up having to stop completely so I wouldn’t hit it. When I was 12-15, dad and I would run several tanks of gas out a weekend. We had a blast. Anyways, yes some jet skis can pass me on calm water. One was beside me and my uncle said the guy wanted to race. Told him he probably would outrun me so I didn’t even try. Boat runs 78. |
Not really passed, but going from a running start, around 50 mph, we both got on it and he got the jump on me, he wasn't really pulling away though, I was going around 70.
My new living situation would make it pretty convenient to have a ski. I was thinking about getting one, or something small and fast like a hydrostream. |

I spent 11 years racing jet skis, retired from that in 2008. Our modifieds were fast back then, but when I see what they are doing now it's scary. My friends that are still racing tell me they are at the point now where the skis are faster than the riders can hang on to. A friend just bought a new modified Sea Doo from Riva Racing in Florida, it does high 80s. A new STOCK Kawi stand up ski will break 60. I raced stand ups myself, and our modifieds barely broke 60 back when I was racing. It's nuts.

A local has the new seadoo w/300hp... it's fast. Last time I was out river was boat rough and he followed close behind while I provided some clam water. Would I own one, yes if I was younger just for the fun of it.

You can't argue that jetskis are a blast. I loved my GTX951 and the 650SX stand up I had. I'd never crowd anyone though. It's just like everything else. Tools ruin it for the rest of us. Politicians included. |
I was into jetski's back in the late 80's, had a kawi 650 standup then got into the kawi X2 around 91 and transitioned into the sea-doo HX in 95 and finally got out of it around 99 or so. I keep getting a waverunner hear and there just to fix and flip but never got into them like the old school stuff. Nothing i have been on jumps waves like the X2 or the HX (although ive never ridden the seadoo 3D)
I will say that boaters can be just as bad on the water as the lake lice........i was almost run over buy a guy on a 32-ish size fountain as he was taking a WIDE right hand turn not paying attention to whats in front of him and the spray from the boat knocked me off my ski! I was in about 4' of water in an area that boats never venture into and he shouldn't have been there to begin with ..... needless to say ive seen both sides of the coin...had a dummy on a waverunner turn right in the last second in front of me at LOTO once as a group of 4 boats were running down the lake to Dicks at around 65mph....I have never turned any boat that hard before and thought i was gonna spin or filp the boat! The guy (not a kid) on the waverunner was white as ghost afterwards cause im sure his life flashed before his eyes! And i needed a few minute to calm down after that one too! |
I had a mid '90s GTX back in the 90's. It was a ton of fun, but in Lake Huron you don't get too many flat days and wave jumping was more fun than going straight anyway. Ended up pretty well destroying it in a few seasons, sold it for next to nothing and forgot all about it, until now. I was thinking I needed to relive my youth this summer so I bought a used Sea Doo Spark. I didn't want fast (that's what the boat is for) I just wanted something similar in size and weight as the old GTX. Honestly it is a ton of fun to get wet on, I like the size and maneuverability compared to most others available today.
I couldn't imagine going 80+MPH on a PWC, I'd love to give it a try though! |

My son had an older Seadoo GTX that would maybe do upper 50's and all his buddies got newer and faster skis last year so we helped him get a newer faster one and bought a 2016 Yamaha FZS that's been modified pretty good and holy **** is this thing fast!!!
Our son is 17 and been riding for years but I've warned him since he started riding that water is like concrete at a certain point! Ski is a blast to ride and I had it to probably 85 mph or so ( speedo stops at 80, it pegged really fast and was still accelerating). Its not so much that its that will run 80+ but its how fast and hard it accelerates to get there. These newer skis even stock are rocket ships for sure! You defiantly have to have some respect for these newer skis and I do hop on his every now and then to go play around on it. |
Holy chit guys. Here: www.pwcforum.com
This whole discussion reminds me of the punch line to this saying. "Whats the hardest part about rollerblading...." Of course, I am joking thru all of this, I owned two wave runners at different points in the last 10 years. But this is OffShoreOnly, I mean cmon. LOL |
got this for my kids to ski and tube behind. modded the motors put in some better impellors and it runs at 62 gps. now its scary in one foot chop but its taken out more than a few family style performance boats. mom and the kids dont care but i'm sure the dad driving is dying inside. lol

We have one similar to that, twin 110 HP 2 stroke screamers. Fun little boat. I modified the shifter so you can go from forward to reverse without having to take the motors to idle.

HA! i've been in that position more than a few time back in the day! :D I came very close to breaking both of my shins once when the ski went up and my arms were straight out and i couldn't throw the ski away from myself.....had to ride it down....ski hit the water first and went back to flat and both my shins came down on the back ledge....the worst pain ive ever had in my life so far! (Luckily never broken a bone so far ...knock on wood) only thing that helped at the time was that it was very early in the season and lake Michigan was still ice cold....i must have floated in the water crying (yes i'll admit to it!) for a good 5min till the cold water numbed the pain :D And like the Donzi...i did end up breaking my ski in half from the abuse it went through! LOL |
Haven't been passed yet but won't be long at this rate. Like just abt any kind of high performance vehicle, they're pretty cool. Unfortunately they can be operated by low-perf individuals with no clue of what's going on around them. I've lost count of how many times I've had to take evasive action to avoid hitting one of them.

I always get a kick out of it when a pwc thinks he has my number. Never been beat by one and usually it's not even close but last fall on Michigan's Cass Lake I was challenged and nearly beaten. It took all I had but I was faster and he was surprised. I don't remember the machine that he had but it was SC'd and modified and he said it ran 82 on gps. My Donzi runs 82-83 gps in most conditions. The day I get beat by a pwc with be a very humbling day!
|
Was with a buddy testing a small single engine cat. Jet ski pulls up next to us, we get after it. The boat we were on was good for low 90's, and the jet ski driver pulled away from us. It was a bit shocking.
