I'm not knocking the QC4V at all, and I wholly agree with the valve train aspect. It's really all about where we want the torque curve to be, and where we want the top end to be. I guess I've answered my own question as to why Merc went with turbos. It's easier to build a production engine at that HP level. But we don't see anybody building custom engines with turbos. Not even for the 50 footers. And those engines are in faster boats.

It's been awhile now but we built a twin turbo big block and ran it in a 2001 30' Checkmate. By the end of our development of that engine combination we were making almost 1500 ft lbs at 3000 rpms and a peak torque of 1800 ft lbs all on 110 octane fuel. The horsepower was 1730. The boat ran 120 mph and had unbelievable acceleration. Obviously bolting on a blower is a simpler process but unlikely to duplicate these kind of numbers.

Branton's 388 had a couple of quad rotor Whipple motors at 1950HP each. Seems like I remember reading somewhere they were up to 2200HP with them at one point, but I can't find it now. I've seen this boat at Custom Performance in Sumerset, KY a couple times.

Branton's 388 had a couple of quad rotor Whipple motors at 1950HP each. Seems like I remember reading somewhere they were up to 2200HP with them at one point, but I can't find it now. I've seen this boat at Custom Performance in Sumerset, KY a couple times.

They claim 91 octane.
Second article (updated with new owner) says they went down on blower size and were down to 1800HP.
Key point though is these were ultra exotic Goodwin 650CI marine engines!!

We made that power with a tall deck 572.

There isn't a single person on this board who wouldn't look at the dyno curves of the Branton engines, for example, and those of a comparable Merc QC4V and, without hesitation, choose the Branton engines. And for likely similar money. And maintenance cycle, for that matter.
