All good points... i need to see if theres is a middle solution , wich would be faster ( 100 mph plus ) than a rebuilt chriscat for similar money ...

not a real problem in life just a fun problem to solve !!!

but the smaller cockpit and lower freeboard on newer boat leads me to appreciate more my old tub solution...

The old boat restoration = sunk money as in no return. Look at the 47 Apache the guy dumped 2mm into and it sold for less than 400K IIRC. There have been countless threads on here where people dump crazy money into old boats and can't get 50 cents on the dollar back even when doing most of the work themselves. Old boats are tough for insurance/financing which makes resale tough also.

Easiest solution: Buy a speedo that is kilometers, then put a MPH sticker on it! If the boat is on plane, wind blowing most people onboard won't know the difference between 90 KPH (56 mph) and 90 MPH!

i only ran this boat WOT once for 5-7 seconds in my 9 years of ownership. I mostly run it between 3000 rpm and 3500 rpm
yesterday was exception day! 4000 rpm for 60 mph for the whole run!
I take it your not a speed guy, which is fine. But why would you drop huge money on a 100 mph boat when you have spent the last decade at speeds of your average lake runabout?

I'm always puzzled by owners of performance boats that have a gazillion idle only hours.

Anyhow, there is no financial upside to redoing old boats. It is entirely an emotional endeavor.

Yeah but Phil usually isn't bankrolling the projects, he is doing the project with the owners money!

Average guy can't buy boats like Phil, doesn't have the connections for parts/labor that Phil has either so to replicate his success wouldn't be easy.

Redoing older boats only pencils out when functionality is the predominant goal. Add fine detail of appearance and fit & finish that are common in the performance realm and the $$ gets upside down quickly.

There is an odd factor of the difference between classic cars and classic boats. I remember reading a thread about it somewhere.

The classic car value started getting money dumped into it from big investors.

Never realy caught on for classic boats. That is a good thing in many ways...largely that an old hull is somewhat affordable for guy to buy and maintain it.

Best "bang for the buck" always has been a 28 Skater. Though they've gone up considerably in the past 5 years with the rest of the boat market, you can still find them for under $150k. They're the most capable rig money can buy in the offshore performance boat used market.
