I have two Nephews and a 1/2 sister that live in Mexico south of Tijuana and travel back and forth to the US daily. Never an issue.

Bribes,,,,, when I was going to China every month I had to bribe customs almost every time to get my tools in. It happens.

Are the places I would not go in just about every major US city, yup.

Just as there are incredibly violent and dangerous cities in the United States based on drug traffic, there are incredibly violent portions of certain states in Mexico. based on drug traffic. To indict an entire country for that is overly simplistic and, frankly, beneath your intelligence.

I paid a bribe to police just south of Ensenada when I was 17. Graft and bribery are nothing new in Mexico. Nor are they exclusive to Mexico.

The same year, I also had a cop in Malibu threaten to beat me up because he "didn't like my attitude." I'm not sure what the legal prescription/remedy/penalty for an attitude deemed to be "bad" is but I'm reasonably sure it's not assault by a peace officer.

It is also worth noting that drug cartel havens changed with the times. Once among the most dangerous cities in the world, Cartagena, Colombia (my son was there a few years ago, as many of my friends have been) is now among the most popular tourist destinations in South America.
my original post was tongue and cheek. But you want to discuss? Ok.

love the “there’s dangerous places in the U.S.” argument everyone that defends the sh*t hole Mexico is throws out there. Yeah, there’s dangerous places all over. I chose not to go to those either. I like to relax when on vacation. Not worry about a kidnapping or cartel shootout at a resort. News source? Pick any. It’s pretty well documented the “issues” that happen in Mexico from a horrendously run govt that allows criminals to run rampant. Doesn’t matter what news source.

cop threatened to tune you up for your attitude? Been there, Oxnard PD did the same to me when I was like 19 and probably deserved the threat. Liiiiitle bit different getting a wake up call for an attitude compared to being thrown in jail because you don’t have any cash on you.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been there. I’ve been all over the pacific coast of Mexico. Again, it’s a sh*t hole and a 3rd world country unless you’re in a resort or some gated community. Have plenty of friends that were born in Mexico, still have family in Mexico and go there often. Again, not many stories of stuff I want to do or deal with while on vacation. For example, good friends brother is a truck driver in Jalisco. CRAZY stories of the stuff he has to deal
with from cartels to corruption. Just crazy. I’ll choose to spend my money elsewhere. Hey, you love Mexico. Cool. I don’t. It’s a dump run by corrupt govt and cartels pumpin dope out like it’s water. And you’re right cartels have changed with the times. Their dumb azz govt that’s in their pocket has allowed them to build small armies and become more powerful than ever. Sweet. Sounds great. Like I said, hopefully your luck won’t run out one of these days while visiting down there. Keeping blinders on may only get you so far. But more to the point, ship a 500-million dollar boat down to a 3rd world country, with even the possibilities of the above mentioned issues for a run? Oaf, hard pass.

Love you too Matt. But nope, you’re wrong. Mexico sucks.

Will shall agree to disagree. Look what just happened. Two reasonable people with very different viewpoints disagreed without hating each other and behaving like ass-hats. It's still possible.

Love you, too, buddy.

Tank,

From everything I've read/heard/seen, if you stick to the major tourist destinations, the ones that are essentially owned by anyone NOT in Mexico (Carnival, Sandals, etc...), you're fine. They are going to keep you safe because they don't want that kind of bad press cutting into their bottom line, and they pay those bribes for you to ensure they don't have to mitigate any of it. If you stray outside of those designated safe zones, you'd best make sure you've got your affairs in order. Is it any more dangerous than, say, Chicago? Yes. The difference is that, in Chicago, there are a few areas where you take your life in your hands, but In Mexico, it's the few areas where you're actually safe..

I would have to bet that the organizers of the PR are well aware of the risk climate in Mexico, and are going to cordon off the tourist areas where boaters are likely to step onto dry land and make sure nothing happens. At least if they want there to be a 2025 PokerRun.

Thanks. Brad.

Been going to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and Pacific coast for about 50 years and never stayed in an all inclusive or resort. Pulled over by federal police once.

Last time I was down there seemed like they had a lot of boats floating around a police station or something like that. Looked to be impounded to me.

Maybe I am wrong, but I feel like a big group of 6 & 7 figure boats down there will draw some unwanted attention?

Mexican tax authorities have a long history of impounding boats for months while they slowly search for BS paperwork discrepancies.
