Lets remember guns are illegal, Americans are jailed there for even having shells in the possession! Your tow rig gets boxed in by 6 guys with AR15s. Their boss loves red and your boat is "all red!" They take the truck/boat and drive off. If you aren't beaten, shot then what?
Going to Mexico is dicey, going to Mexico with flashy stuff is simply stupid. I'd go with Tank on this one considering his employment/background.

Local guy here lost his Viking sport fish for a year while his captain sat in jail after admitting he had one weapon on board. The MX feds boarded him without cause during a routine fuel stop.

The closest I'll get to Mexico is the Mexican slop joint in town, however later that night my wife moves into the guest bedroom because of extremely windy conditions in the master bedroom.

Plenty of places to go to in Mexico still, if one has local well-established contacts, but like in all other countries across the world there are plenty of no-go-zones and plenty of advice against certain conduct.
This is the way to do Mexico but plenty of pre-cautions still to take.

This boat used to spend Jan/Feb in Isla Mujeres and we would fly down and fish for a few days at a time.
Capt Glen Cameron ran the boat for my neighbor at the time. Glen had a Mexican guy help shuttle people from the airport to the boat and try to keep the single guys out of trouble. All went well as far as I recall but I stopped going 5 yrs ago. The sailfish bite was insane though. Like catching bluegills in a farm pond. 50+ hook ups a day. Most of the boats at the dock were from NC and FL.
We had a similar set up at Sumners point on Rum Cay in July for Marlin. Bahamas was way more fun, never felt like ya needed eyes in the back of your head on Rum.
