oh man that was always one of my biggest fears riding in the past! Get well soon man..

florida gator 02-07-2003 08:19 AM

:( I am going out on a limb to say from many things I have read here since joining that we are a group of adrenaline junkies. With that comes toys that can be dangerous. As I pray for Mike and his family/friends, I will keep my wife from seeing this post. She does not have a problem with most of the toys or things that I do to get my fix but, has expressed some dissatisfaction with my latest interest to get a bike. From stories like this she feels bikes can be very dangerous. As I read this story, I see nothing dangerous in what Mike has done. It seems like everytime I read of an accident like this the fault lies in the hands of the other driver. And sad to say, since we do not have to requalify for a drivers license in this state anymore, it usually involves an older person who probably should not have been on the road to begin with.

God bless you Mike and have a speedy, full recovery.

James

HiPerf2000 02-07-2003 08:25 AM

that is horrible...Best of luck Mike for a speedy recovery.

that is also one of my biggest fears when i ride. :(

Tim G. 02-07-2003 08:28 AM

Old People

I moved to S. Florida in August. I saw the potential disaster here.. I never put one mile on my road bike down here.
I have confidence in my ability, but the old people, and others are just too unpredictable.
I raced off road Enduro, and Hare Scrambles for years..and had a lot less worry doing that!
90% of the people 65+ should NOT be on the road! I could type all day listing the stupid things that I've seen..
But what lawmaker will step up to mandate retesting the seniors??? They know they'd never get reelected..

So the bikes are gone, and now I have one of these money hungry offf shore boats.

Now about those sail boats..

Best of luck to Mike. I know his pain, and would never wish it on another decent american. (would be nice to send Mike's pain to Saddam)

Everybody- say a prayer that he recovers fully and gets back in the boat ASAP. Be sure to include Kim in your prayers. Kim is another OSOer, that has cancer.

Everybody enjoy your weekend, and think about just how lucky you really are.

AugiePensa 02-07-2003 08:30 AM

update......

I just talked to Mikolos and he confirmed that Carter is in serious shape. He is in ICU on a respirator. I contacted Lynn w/ APBA Offshore and she is going to get something released on the APBA Website. Mike Carter was a tenacious inspector w/ APBA and was really respected in the job he did. Carter will have a long road to recovery ahead of him. Big Mike let us know if you hear anything. HANG IN THERE CARTER ! BH

BobbyB 02-07-2003 09:49 AM

Brian, I got a call from Lisa at about 7:00 this morning. Mike was in surgery until midnight last night. His vitals were not holding steady (losing blood pressure) so they decided to let him rest until this morning. At about 7:30 they took him back into the operating room where he has been ever since. Lisa said the trauma surgeon estimated that he had about a 50/50 chance of losing his left leg. He broke his femur which severed his femoral (?) artery and the leg did not have blood flow for a few hours. They tried last night to bypass the fracture and restore bloodflow to the lower part of the leg but apparently had minimal success. I will keep everybody updated as I hear from Lisa. Hang in there Mikey.

Mike is a tough dude. My thoughts, prayers, and best wishes are with him.

BK 02-07-2003 02:29 PM

I never met Mike C. in person, but we have chatted on various boat boards starting about 4 or 5 years ago. Lost touch over the past couple of years, but was happy to hear he was busy at work, inspecting on the APBA circuit.

So to Mike C. and "Scarallama" --

Hang in there Mike! As Intolerant said earlier..miracles DO happen!

I am a believer too. - Remember that you have a great family here on OSO and your "Llama relatives" are keeping vigil too . We're all praying for you and want you back healthy and strong.

fondly,
BK and Kasseri

Wardey, That is correct. He is at St Josephs over next to the stadium. I picked his personal stuff up from the Carrollwood Fire Station this morning. He had a full face Arai helmet, kevlar jacket, Sidi riding boots, and kevlar gloves. Thank god for the quality of his equipment or he would no longer be with us. The only things that were missing were his wedding ring and his wallet. I'm sure the wedding ring was cut off of his hand and is probably laying in the middle of Dale Mabry Hwy. His wallet is a mystery. I have not seen his bike yet but the police officer told me it was toast.

I tried to call Lisa at lunch time to let her know I had picked up Mikes stuff and all I got was voicemail. I will try again shortly and keep everybody updated.

Mike

Wardey 02-07-2003 02:44 PM

Big Mike - Tell Lisa if she or the family needs anything to let us know. Our prayers are with them. Dave Warden

BigMike 02-07-2003 02:44 PM

Just spoke to Lisa. She said Mike is out of surgery now and is in the intensive care unit. The doctors seem to think that his leg is doing o.k. but have told us that every hour he survives is a major hurdle. He went into cardiac arrest twice today on the operating table but was revived. C'mon Mikey. Dig deep brother.

Mike

HyperBaja 02-07-2003 05:55 PM

Yeah, I would also like to send a card. Hope it all heals ok, and as quickly and painfull-less way possible.

Tommy

BobbyB 02-07-2003 06:20 PM

If someone will post an address i will also send a card.

BK 02-07-2003 06:43 PM

I just got verification of exactly where Mike C. was and talked to his nurse, Vivian. She says right now he can receive cards at:

St Josephs Hospital
ICU - c/o Mike Carter
2929 W. Dr. M L King, Jr Blvd.
Tampa, FL 33607

We're pushing for you to get well, Mike!

Andy Buzz 02-07-2003 07:19 PM

If anyone has a suggestion of something to bring to the Hospital, I am in the area and can help out. Sometimes the best healer is the support from friends that come forward and remind those in an unfortunate situation of the support and strength from friends. Hopefully soon Mike can look back at this event as just a bad day.

THEJOKER 02-07-2003 07:33 PM

OSO Buzz...........

Mike is a great fan of OSO and I know that he would find some joy that we are wishing him well on here. Andy - Big Mike - let Carter know we're talking trash about him on here . CARTER GET WELL SOON AND I'M COMING TO SEE YOUR ASS SOON - Hollis

J-BOAT 02-07-2003 08:06 PM

May God bless you mike with a speedy recovery.
Hang in there.
May God bless the family also.
