Profile or Bayliner
Need responses to which to choose for quality and crafsmanship. I choose Bayliner.
you cant be serious
OK, I'll bite. Let's hear your bad luck story about Profile. I have heard good and bad about them.
SLOFILE OR GAYLINER HMMM? THATS A TUFFY.
sorry guys j.k. I had to .lol
I just put it out there. Yes I owned a Profile. Lets just see what happens here with the survey.
imho I thank the profile is the better of the two boats I don't know about detail or finish work but they seem a little more solid.
Is this a joke?
I would be interested in what problems you have had with the Profile. Thinking about buying a friend of mine 29.
I can't believe that someone wants to admit knowing that much about a bayliner. crazy world we live in now, I thought that we went down to yellow alert, better call Tom Ridge and put it back up to orange ;)
Tom McCann or Payless?
I've personaly seen Profiles being built and I've met the owners of the company. Don't start this and not finish it.
I agree, I can't wait till boating season starts, to much B.S.:(
I can finish this. I sold my brand new profile. I can speak from experience. I bought a brand new profile in 1996. I used it for one season and it needed alot of work. I dont want to slam profile becauses he is just a guy who likes boats and is trying to make a living, but I can not excuse the behavior of Randy Shultz when I personaly spoke to him on the phone about the problems with my boat. When I told him about the problems with the boat he statred to use profane language towards me and blamed me and everyone on the east cost that owns a profile that it was our fault with the problems. He also gave me details about the relationship between him and my dealer that I needed not to hear. In short he would not back his boat and I had to have my dealer arrange to fix the boat locally. Pretty good for a boat I bought brand new with a 5 year hull warranty. I should of just bought a used boat and took a chance. I was not the only one with problems with profile. There were 6 other people in my area that bought them and all of them had hull problems. Sorry to seem so digruntled about the situation but you know what, I am a very fare person and easy to get along with if that phone call I made to Randy went differantly I would not be so negative towards profile.

When did this phone call take place?
The only boats I've ever owned that didn't need a "little something" here or there were my Boston Whalers and my Formula.
I'm not talking about inevitable mechanical issues that pop up (we ARE talking about boats), but in areas of quality of construction, rigging, fasteners, paintwork, glasswork, upholstery, etc., the only things that have ever needed fixed on either of these boats has been mechanical stuff or things that I or another has broken. Correct Crafts, Wellcrafts, Sea Rays, Ebbtides, Gibsons, Nauta-Lines, DriftRCruise, Harris, Bullet, Winner, Mirage, they've all had their share of issues. That doesn't mean they are junk. It also doesn't mean that they're not junk. It just means they're boats. None are the same. |
The only reason I brought it up was because someone asked me about Profile. You sound like you own one. The only people not talking about it are ones that own them and are trying to get rid of them. Really, they are that bad. Im sorry, but I got on the subject and that phone call comes back to me. All he needed to say was I will stand behind my boat and correct the problem, not @#$% you its your problem and blame me and every one on the east coast for the problems.
Im not saying all boats are equal. I'm saying if the manufacture had some p&r savvay I would probly own a Profile today. I couldnt afford but a 26 back then, Now I can purchase anything Profile offers. But because of that phone call I will never look at another one. That goes for all boats, If they dont have good customer service they got nothing. If the owner of the company has an attidude like that what are the people working for him like. I cant wait till boating season
What do you have for a ride now?
SPWilson, LOL. You must be old like me. They have been gone a long time.
So what are you asking in your original question? Are you looking to buy one or the other, or just want to know peoples opinions on both companys? From hours upon hours of reading OSO threads, people on here are only gonna bash Bayliner and call it something else (Gayliner, Flatliner, etc....)
i have to say im alittle surprized.
friend has a 29 that hasnt had any problems. fit and finish seams good also. doesnt compare to a formula but not many do. |
I don't like Bayliner...
TOM:
I would like to know the specifics of the problems you had with the boat if you care to share. What had to be repaired. Nobody should be treated the way you were but I was not there. I am not afraid to tell you I own a 1997 29' profile vee. 500 + hrs and no hull problems I am aware of anyway. It does not have the performance of some but it is the smoothest ride of any 29' I have been in. I would match it's rough water ability with any in it's size. I am very happy with the boat to date. Sorry for your problems but you need to iron them out with Randy. |
OMG! I just did the poll... It's 50/50?????
Why do you think they call it "BAY" "LINER" :D
I really have to believe that Profiles quality has realy taken some leaps for the better in the last couple years. This isn't the first time I've heard concerns about the older onces.
That's terrible that Randy treated you that way. I'm still curious to know both sides of the story. Randy really doesn't seem to be the kind of person to act that way without being provoked. Randy really would like to sell the company. I'd love to see someone who is buisness minded take over the ranes. I think he has a great start, he just doesn't have the buisness ability to take the company coast to coast. |
i have a 03 28 cat i think is bad ass. Randy has all ways been very nice to me when i have called him on something about the boat. I'm in customer service when people call me about problems on there new homes, if thay come out of the gate wide open at me i just hang up, some people cuss back though. did you come out of the gate wide open.
WTC,
I see this is your first post. Welcome aboard. Don't let this post bitter your taste for this board. Did you buy the boat directly from the factory or a dealer? Brian |
WTC, if you are in customer service and somebody comes at you with a problem, it should be your job to not hang up and match their rudeness, but rather to find out what their real problem is and solve it. That makes for satisfied customers, and the best long term ones usually had a problem that was taken care of professionally to everyone's satisfaction. Sounds like a few people need some training.

Can't comment on Profile other than they look nice, everyone rips on Bayliner,my Dad just sold his 1985 Bayliner and it had 1000hrs on it and he never had one problem with that boat never took it back to the dealer, nothing and I rode my ass around a lot in that boat so I can't say anything bad about Bayliner, a lot depends on who owns the thing, there's quite a few knukkleheads out there.
Would this thread classify itself as...
"we get what we pay for"? People buy Bayliners because they don't want to pay for the Sea Ray quality. I am not familiar with Profile, and do not mean to offend ANYONE, but I am guessing that it is much less expensive than the Velocity, AT, PP and the others n the high quality category. Just curious! |
I don't think a Profile is any less expensive than most. You can buy factory direct and then yes you will save a bunch. But that would be true with any builder.
All Eddie Marine hardware, Mcloud interior. Hand laid with high end materials, fully bonded deck and hull. Full cockpit and cabin liners in most models. What more can you ask for? I've molested allot of brands of boats. I'd say Profile ranks right up there. But I will say that the problems with Randy are bringing up concerns. I'd be interested to hear some other peoples opinions. Good or Bad. |

I have a buddy with a 28' Profile cat. He loves it and has had no major issues that I'm aware of. That's about the extent of my Profile knowledge or experience.

More info please. I've been through their shop, and it appeared workmanship and materials was top quality. Their hospitality was awesome. I showed up outa the blue and asked if I could take a look around and got a personal tour of everything. Jumped in 2 different boats, and the 29 really got my attention. It was my plan to purchase a 29 with a 500hp in 2 years. I hope this post doesn't change that.! I own a Baja now, which has been completely trouble free. What really impressed me was that Profile didn't slam any other brand of boat at all. I talked at length with a Powerquest dealer one time and you woulda thought I owned the worlds biggest steaming pile when he got done trashing Baja's. Profile just seemed genuinely excited to be churning out boats........:p
I have delt with Randy Schultz the owner of Profile for about eight years now and can only say that he has been very nice to deal with. At times he may have alot on his plate like the rest of us, but he always came thru. I had a 1994 29' and it was a great boat. Fast for a single engine true 29' boat.
I own an '01 28 cat with 750hp, dry exhaust, imco shortie, 5 bladed Hering prop and to be honest I am not easy with the boat. When I get the chance to stretch it out trust me I do and its in Barnegate Bay which if anybody is familiar with its always 2-3+ footers the boat is great. The only reasons it was ever behind sea tow is because I am a Bravo abuser. Any problems were taken care of by Randy or Tom. As for quailty it is top notch for boats that are close to cost for the "average" person to own, unlike other small custom builders who build them cheap to meet the market which is alright but test it and market it like its a skater with 1500-2000hp+ in a cat that isn't even a true tunnel and kill every one on board. It was ashame what happend to that builder but if we are going to bash quailty lets look at some facts .
