I have gone 4 time's to about ten of the island's, when anybody is ready to go give me a call and I'll tell you what the deal is and what I think. Remember gas is about $6.00 a gal. and looks like tea.

We took my 35 Cafe from Ft. Pierce all through the Abacos, Berry Islands, Bimini and back to Miami last Christmas with no problems (600 miles). You do have to wait for good weather for the crossings but once there weather doesn't play as much. Gas was 3.65 in Walkers Cay and 3.06 in Bimini. Boat US does do a patrol for the major crossing areas, but you have to be able to get in touch with them. Most cell phones only will get signal approx 10 miles off of Florida. Sat phones is best but expensive. Most people over there use a single side band radio for commuications.

Florida Powerboat Club is planning 2 trips to the Bahamas this summer. The Gulf is generally more calm in the summer months. We only recommend boats with 2 or more engines join us. It only takes us about 1 1/2 hour to get to where we clear customs and have a nice lunch. Then we continue on to our final destination.
I hope to have some OSO participation this year!!

Jackie,
I am glad to see you joined the board, Welcome! I had fun with you and Stew last week in Daytona. I am sure Stew has some good footage of us and Miss Nortech.

You might wish to check the new immigration rules. It is now the biggest pain imaginable to go thru whatever they call immigration now. You must present your crew at immigration in Miami at the port (can't go there by boat). and then do customs. I ain't going to the Bahamas by boat anytime soon.....

U.S. immigration wasn't a big issue. We cleared in Ft Lauderdale. While we did have to go to the office at Port Everglades, it only took about 2 minutes.
