73 Cigarette Flat Deck
1 Attachment(s)
Hopefully I got your attention with the subject description. This is the 73" Cigarette flat deck scale model of the famous race winning 36' hull that carried Don Aronow to so many wins in the late seventies and early eighties. She meets the class rules for the APBA RC Superboat class. Designed for single or twin two stroke gas engines from 23cc up to 70cc. 18.5" beam, 18 lbs. dry. Speed from 35 -65 mph. Email with any comments or questions, or just reply to this thread.

Here is a second picture showing the Merc #6 twin outdrives. These are counter-rotating, internally geared, aluminum cases, and inboard steering. These are no longer made, but I am trying to import some similar ones from Germany. The bronze props are from England.
|
I never saw R/C #6 drives. How cool is that? How much did they cost and who made them?
How long it she? Got any motors in there? |

She is 73" in length. Yes there are twin 23cc high mod water cooled Zenoah two stroke gas engines about 3.6 hp apiece. Picture of engines attached. They run tuned pipes that exit through the transom exhausts. The drives were about $300 apiece, and were made by Pete Kanellos in Mass. They are no longer avaiable. I manufacture this hull as a hobby business just so that RCers can get one if they want. Bob.
|
Are you setting up to manufacture as a kit
If so I would be interested |
I have been manufacturing the hull for a year and a half. I do not supply the other components though they are easily obtained. Bob.
|
Nice toy!!!!!!
I bet you'll have over 2K into it by the time your done. |
You should start producing and selling more, I read your posts about them in the Cigarette forum. I am sure a lot of people on OSO would be interested in buying them, me being one of them.
It would be real cool if you could build different hull models.......top gun, cafe racer, ss....ect. and paint them to match induvidual owners boats:cool: |

I would consider building a newer style Cigarette hull, but the time and cost involved in building a new plug and expertly crafted molds is substantial. As Ron estimated above the boat with engines and drives exceeds two grand. The hull is $500 plus shipping. The outdrives are $300 apiece. The engines are $450 apiece. Painting is as expensive as the airbrush allows. It would take some substantial deposits against future guaranteed delivery to justify the initial expense for the hull. I am willing to consider it though. I must add that I have no interest in building a smaller hull though. Here is a picture of the Merc #6 from Germany that I am trying to bring in. Bob.

That's the sharpest R/C boat I've ever seen. I had no idea you could get #6 drives like that. That is really sweet!
|
wow
that one beats the snot Outa my japanese R/C model
|
Do I see a trim ram in that drive?
So are these drives available or not? Dry sump or what? And you forget the cost of the radio. OK more like $2500. |
You do not see a trim ram per se, but the prop shaft angle is manually adjustable a few degrees. What you are probably looking at is a stop that keeps the drive at the adjusted angle. The drives can pivot upward if they hit an obstruction. The drives are available, it's just a question of cost and predictable availability. I have been trying to get one for five months. I need to look at the dimension from the prop shaft centerline to the bottom two mounting bolts. This dimension is definitely less than the Kanellos drives. This obviuosly affects the X dimension. and on the RC boats the props can not be too high out of the water, and actually the bottom of the prop shaft should be about even with the bottom of the keel. The drives are wet sump with ATF fluid or 30 weight oil for lubrication. The radios are less than $200 even with failsafes for automatic (loss of radio signal or low battery voltage to the receiver) and manual override engine shutdown which is absolutely necessary for safety.

Here's a picture of my boats, One is a seamless hull I made and it Has a moddified 30cc water cooled Homelite with wet tuned pipe. It also has a water pump and clutch and surface drive makeing it a nice safe play boat
The Other Boat (Justice) is a 51 inch Patriot with a full mod G23 Zenoah and dry pipe. Direct surface drive no clutch. I also build and sell these boats. Chuck |

I'm modding out an Echo weedeater now for mine. I have had quite a few different motors in it, zenoah, homelite, ryobi, and echo seems to be my favorite. It isn't as fast as the marine zenoah, but the clutch and reliability are far superior in my opinion.
I was thinking about building a 60+ inch cat with twins.... have been looking at the #6 for a while now... how well do they hold up??? I'm really abusive on the boats, The shaft design I have now has lasted 2 years without any problems... it was a custom design my dad and I built, but before it I couldn't get and of the flex shaft crap in stock boats to las 30 minutes Ernie |
Re: 73 Cigarette Flat Deck
Nice boats guys, there is a hobby shop down the street from my old house that had powerboat type looking models that went over 100 mph and they raced them out near my house also :)

Re: 73 Cigarette Flat Deck
ren3;
Do you have a website for your stuff. I too am interested in buying. |
Re: 73 Cigarette Flat Deck
I can't afford a model V-6 :D
but I might can swing a pair of #6's if the sife will go for it... I could use a stagger set up in my hull... but I want to build a twin cat Ernie |
Re: 73 Cigarette Flat Deck
Had to re-register so REN3 is 35cig now. There is a possibility that I can supply some of my 73" Cigarette hulls if there is enough interest. Sorry for the delay, but divorce and survival comes first! Email me at [email protected] if anyone is intersted in a hull. Thanks. Bob N.

Re: 73 Cigarette Flat Deck
I see very little mention of Quick Draw when people talk about model engines. They make a kick a$$ little motor. A buddy of mine has a pair of the 7hp Quick Draws in a 72" Apache. That thing screams when he brings those motors up to 17,000 rpm.
Quickdraw also makes a 14hp 2 cylinder motor. |
Re: 73 Cigarette Flat Deck
I'd be interested in a blank hull in white gel coat. How Much?????
|
Is there still any R/C interest here?
I was searching and found this site. I was wondering if any of you fellows are interested in r/c boating here. I have plenty of info and even selling a couple of boats myself. Email me at [email protected] if this sparks anyones interests. Warren.

I'm still into it, but havent ran my boat in years.... the motor sill needs work and I need a lathe to complete it "right"
what do your hulls look like? Ernie |
Why haven't you finished. Check these out.
What do you need done to the engine? I have access to machine shop at work. Watercooling a head I am guessing. What hull are you building up. Here are a couple of links to a small bit of what I have. Check them out.
My Gallery of stuff. Stuff for sale.
