Did you Get a Christmas Bonus

Even though my boss does not read OSO I thought I would say how generous he is. We are a small company
of 10, I am the only who works outside of their KY office. First he flies me in to Louisville round trip for about $450.00 just so I could be at the Company Christmas dinner. He then springs for a first class group dinner at an expensive restaurant. We then all receive a Christmas bonus based on how long we worked there, after taxes mine was close to $1,000.00 (1 & 1/2 yrs). In addition we all are given nice gifts. But the icing on the cake is, he calls today and says that he feels bad he can't give us a 401K because it is to expensive to administrate for such a small group. However we had a good year so he decided to give us each $1,500.00 after taxes! Since I have direct deposit he said it was probably already in my bank account!

The one bad part of the story is since Mr P and I have a joint account, that money is probably already spent on boat parts:D

Waterfoul 12-22-2003 05:10 PM

SPITFIRE 12-22-2003 05:53 PM

Nice to know some employers are still generous. I haven't seen anything ... only been there 6 months so I don't expect anything but how's this... last thursday letter from corporate comes and says due to bad year, all hourly employees will NOT be paid for Christmas and New Years. I'm local management on salary , I get paid , but if this is how they operate and treat their people I'm leaving. Anybody hiring in the Charlotte NC area????? Merry Christmas To All!!!!

Great to hear about your bonus. The 401k is not that expensive to administrate these days. He should look harder at that since that is a key thing to attracting and keeping higher-level people. It's good for the employees, and good for the company. If there is too much profit for the company, they pay more taxes. Might as well distribute some of it into the 401k plan and get happier employees!

The damn boss just hasn't got the taxes figured out yet.

OH - I am the BOSS
It's great to be self employed.

10x 12-22-2003 08:34 PM

Christmas bonus??? Yeah, I remember somethin kinda like that around christmas. One of the first companies I ever worked for,(quite a few years ago) would give their employees a $5 a year christmas bonus. I worked there almost 21 years. After you hit $50 (10 years) you reached the MAX! One friend of mine still works there and says same boss/owner same bonus nothins changed. Do I really miss that place???????? This guy was so tight, he'd squeeze a buffalo nickel till it's eyes popped! (and he Hated my Cigarette boat!)

robyw1 12-22-2003 08:36 PM

I got a handshake and was invited to come back next year. I thought I was doing good.

stevebaretta 12-22-2003 08:54 PM

No bonus here. Probably no yearly raise and on top of that.........health insurance is going up $100.00 a month!

Wardey 12-22-2003 09:04 PM

SOB ---- I was gonna build a swimming pool and if enough was left over I was gonna fly you all down here to celebrate ---- but all I got was a membership to the Jelly of the Month Club !!!! If I had a rubber hose.......

thedonz 12-22-2003 09:05 PM

I am trying to give myself a bonus this year, but Florida Powerboats won't return my calls on the TG...

MnFastBoat 12-22-2003 09:52 PM

last bonus I received was when I worked for a two resturaunt local fast food joint back in High School
Part time job @ 3.5 an hour recieved 400$ gift :)
I guess we do get a $25 gift certificate from current employer for a local grocery store.
Sad part is everyone uses that to buy food for our christmass pot lucks so basically the company gets the 25 bucks back when we feed everyone.
I did get a raise today, well at least was told about it.
But that does not count because it is 9 months past due.

For the first time since I've been in business, I have three employees. One started last week, one in October, and the other in July. The one I hired in October is a great employee. The one I hired in July is alright but has mentioned for the last two months what he got for bonuses at other jobs (starting to sound like a broken record).

I have only got a bonus twice in my life. But my company could not survive without them. I don't want to empty the bank but I want them to know they are appreciated.

How much bonus should I give?

Steve_H 12-22-2003 10:13 PM

the company i work for gives a weeks pay for bonuses.........except this year. tough year!

fatdaddy 12-22-2003 10:14 PM

I didn't get one but gave every single one of my employees a week's salary as a bonus. After hearing the stories here, I must be a decent boss.

mcollinstn 12-22-2003 10:23 PM

I handed out $27,300 in Christmas bonuses, threw a $55/plate party and had a drawing for the gifts that averaged $110 apiece. Wives all got stuff costing around $40, gave gift certificates at the supermarket, and did a lot of handshaking and hugging.

My Christmas Bonus was a $340,000 operating loss for the corporate year. Merry Christmas to me.

What kind of business is it and what do they do for a living. My wife is a Compnesation specialist and she said that anyone that starts with them after October does not get a bonus. Average bonus on a machine shop floor would range any place from 1 grand to 2 grand depending on performance. So I would guess if you want to give them something then 500, 300, and maybe 100 respectivly. If they are "profesionals" then it is a totally different ball game.

I am self employeed and it was a slow end of the year capped off with a guy who to the best of what I can see is going to screw me for his final bill.

Dusty-

What do you feel comfortable with? I'm so surprised at some of the stuff I see here. What we have done for the past 5 years is 2 weeks pay (taxed) as a bonus for everyone employed over 1 year, and proportional to that if less than a year with $100 minimum (even to temp employees). I'm glad to do that if we can, and glad that we can! We're profitable, and any profit gets taxed and goes to the tax guys anyway (IRS)!

Rippem 12-23-2003 12:38 AM

I'm on Troutly's program exactly...O.T. until I'm ready to go postal. :hothead: At least @ doubletime on the two holidays they will at last be paying me what I'm worth! I am looking at color plotters and some other worthwhile ways to spend it on the boat though! :D

Crazyhorse 12-23-2003 05:44 AM

I guess you could say I've gotten a Christmas bonus. I've had the last 6 weeks off due to surgery and have gotten full pay from my employer.

ofshore 12-23-2003 05:52 AM

I don't know yet but the company i work for (40-50 employees) usually looks at their profits and puts something in our 401k if they are profitable. (this was not a good year:( ) It's never a lot of money but they do a few things throughout the year for us like turkeys at thanksgiving and a company picnic and golf tournament in the summer. for the most part it's a pretty good place to work for.

open87 12-23-2003 06:53 AM

well after thinking about what i posted, i am commissioned based 100% , i show up to work between 8:30 - 9 everyday , leave when i want to run errands and leave at 4:30 or so. do get 2 weeks paid vacation, good benifits and i pull in 50% labor which is just about unheard of in the collision biz. i feel bad for the hourly person because they don't get the "fringe " like i do . they have to be in at 8 and leave at 5:30. but then again , i have paid my dues in this biz 16 yrs and counting, i still think a 1% bonus would be nice since i do produce about 60k a year in profit for them. but the 6.50 an hour general employee should get a bonus. without them you don't have a company. eric....

26scarab 12-23-2003 07:13 AM

I got a bonus ! I'm still employed.
Actually I'm off from tommmorow and I return on the 5th all with no pay.

Ms PatriYacht 12-23-2003 08:02 AM

Dusty,
I think a bonus should definitely have to do with how long someone has worked there. In your case with such new employees you should set a policy, such as
$10.00 a week for each week worked, minimum of $50.00 or $25.00 Thats how my current employer does it, and everyone thinks that is fair. Also the second thing employees value most is time off, so when money is tight a paid vacation day is alway welcome. I always though if I owned a company I would give a Thanksgiving bonus to each employee to have an extra day off between Thanksgiving and New Year, Christmas is a busy time and an extra day off would be appreciated. You would have to stagger all the days off on a first come basis so not to effect business. I worked for a company where they always spent a lot of money on a party, but if you the employees, they would preferred a paid vacation day to a party with the boss. Just my 2 cents

Then the numbers that I said are fair. What Pam did say is that a person entering a job in the middle of the year like that should assum no bonus so it is their responsibility to get a SIGN ON bonus. This is because they are going to forgo the bonus that they have worked and earned at their old job. See this is why I keep her around :D:D

In my bus. I did what I could for my guys. From getting them a gift certificate at a nice rest., or money. As Phantom said the Bonus is taxed at I believe 50%!!!!!! OUCH so keep that in mind. Gifts like my dinners counted as bonus's, and were taxed accordingly.

Profesional people can work bonus's so that they make around 5-20% of their yearly sallary. Some like the CEO of Disney make more then their sallary based on performance (I believe his bonus last year was some place in the 20 million range!!!) Give them something it goes a LONG way to making them happy but as some one said even a day off or acknowlegment of a job well donw.

I am amazed at how many of you guys have employers that do not recognize the importance of a pat on the back. It is very sad to see but I guess a sign of the times :(

Jon

thunderdan 12-23-2003 09:44 AM

I take my employees out for a nice dinner every year as well as a bonus depending upon how long they have been with me. It ranges from 250-4000. I have only 10 year round employees though. We also close our office between Christmas and New Years in which everyone is paid.
