Ok...
I know there's an OSO member with a Sonic 28 for sale... Might be worth a look. I've never been on a twin BB Sonic 28.

OK,
Here's "impulsive"s boat. You should PM him for info...

Business Opportunity forces sale.1995 Sonic 28ss. New 502's w/60hrs in excellent condition $42k

Seems to be priced pretty agressively.

The 28 sonic is a bit shorter than the Pantera.. by about 2-2.5'.
Sonics are put together pretty well. The only thing I don't like is that walk around really cuts into interior space.
Here's a pic of a friend's 26 Sonic interior.

I HAVE A FRIEND THAT IS PUTTING HIS 28 POWERPLAY UP FOR SALE IT HAS A 850 HP MOTOR IN IT RUNS IN THE MID 80'S YOU CAN CALL ME AT 770)827-7612 IT HANDLES ROUGH WATER VERY WILL.

powerguy 01-09-2004 01:17 PM

Tim G. - The length difference between a 28 sonic and a 28 pantera is 2-2.5 feet? impulsives boat sounds a little too rough with big gashes in the side.

sonic 31ss - I want to stay with stock mercruiser power for reliability and maintenance.

GLH 01-09-2004 01:33 PM

Tim,
I had a condo on Three Island Blvd. in the 90's, last floor facing south on one of the three towers around the turning basin. A lot of blue hairs in that complex, they were not to crazy about us parking the Corvette in the "Porte Cachere" and tipping the doorman.

One December they sent me a notice to send them a list of potential people that were going to use my condo during the winter. I sent them the Montreal phone-book they left me alone after that.

Tim G. 01-09-2004 01:41 PM

I live on Three Islands blvd in Ocean Reef, just before the Guard shack...behind Wal Mart...

It's a small world....

Tim, I have been on 28 Sonics with BB and SB. The boat is not balanced well. The boat starts to 'bounce' if you will at speeds new 60 mph. The BB boat did it (Father owned one) and the SB boat did it too (good buddy of mine owned one for one summer).

Sonic doesn't make the 28 any more, and it doesn't surprise me.

Its to bad that twins are a must because I think you would be impressed with the way a 288 Sunsation runs in the rough. Now I haven't played with mine in the ocean, but run Lake Ontario lots and that water can get really rough and unpredictable. I push mine hard and other boaters are surprized to see only one outdrive on the back after we've gone in a poker run or fun run.

Does Apache make a 28 anymore? Or do you have to find one 10 years old?

Definately a Cig, Flyes level and lands smooth, they are a real strong running boat in the rough and are built like brick ****houses;) If I had any other choice for a 28 it would either be a Pantera or a Saber:cool:

First of all..why would anyone want to buy a 28' Saber, and take a bath on it, when you turn around and try and sell a "no-name" brand boat???

My advice to you, is to buy something that is going to hold it's value for more than a year. Unless you can get it for $20K with 500hp's, because that is what the last one I heard went for (buzzin bye)

well if thats the case , ill buy 3 and sell 2 of them for at least 40k each

jafo 01-09-2004 03:53 PM

Tim-
The room in your engine compartment looks a LOT better than that Powerplay I looked at. Inboard work doesn't look so menacing on your Pantera. I've always admired their classic offshore lines.
Scorps are the absolute nuts on boats this size- I think two of the 28' AT's with twins have them, and they are 80+ GPS boats.
Although not a custom, the Formula 292 with Scorps is a well-built fast boat, but more like 27' in length without the molded-in swim platform, and should almost make this list?
Jim

Todd35.... First post and it's very negative...go figure  You just broke the #1 rule for ever having any credibility. I would tell ya about Dan's boat and it's value but, you ain't worth it.

I can stand in the bilge in front of the engines in my boat.

10-4 on the scorps.. But they're "racing" engines and cost plenty more than 496HOs... Here comes that money thing again...

Ask primal instinct about 700 hours of bone crushing waves over 9 years and he sold his 28 for what he paid for it. That's the single dumbest 1st post I've seen since Maxine Kramer. NK

Pantera 28.
Just sold a Donzi 28ZX with 350 mags.
Not a bad riding boat but not like others in this group. 70mph with 350 mags and
75 with scorpions. I've read they tend to chine walk with higher power.
The Pantera is a bunch more fun to drive in rough water even with a single. Tends to cut the waves and not smack through as much. More comfortable at higher speeds in very rough water. Feels like you could never damage it in any conditions. The Donzi didn't feel that way
but I liked that boat as well.
The 350mag/Bravo combination is undestructable.
Greg

In response to Todd35's first post. This person obviously has no idea of what a 28' Saber is or what it can do. Powerboat Magazine thought enough of this boat to award it "Outstanding Offshore Performance" sometime in the last ten years.
I guess my no-name 27' Activator isn't worth crap either.

By the way, how much does a 28' saber cost? or a 41' cost?

Funny you should ask about the cost .... Just did a comparison the other day and was happy to remember what a great deal my boat was and is ... Now ... I'll give you the crappy resale on a 28 currently ... but if I remember the title of this thread asks for the BEST 28' for rough water ... and I can assure you that there are NO boats in the same 28' category that will be better in the rough then the SABER ! Granted ... some of the resale may be due to the lack of a marketing presence (once again ... no T-shirts) and the fact that the last couple guys who actually moved boats "dumped" them rather than continue to wait for a cash buyer ... That said .... I can think of quite a few boats from "household" brand name builders that have had a couple birthdays in the classifieds . What does all this tell us .... I don't know ... stick with golf another summer ?????

Let's go another route ... what 28 would you bring to the OK corral if I'm packin Buzzin's old boat ... Hhmmm ?

JM
