My parents called me tonight from Ft. Myers and said there was an article in the paper stating the race, scheduled for May, has been cancelled due to the lack of funding.
Here we go again.... I planned all of my vacations based on the race schedules...........

Not particularly surprised, it would have been the SBI race. Last year they only had, I believe, 18 boats show up. We boated down to watch the big boats run, got there according to the schedule hour and a half early from the official start time, only to find out because of the dismal showing they ran all classes at once and missed the whole thing. This after checking the website the night before to be sure no changes had taken place. I was not planning on attending this year. Besides, we have two races this year, Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix (SBI) over July 4th weekend, and the Sarasota Offshore Showdown (APBA-the best of the two) August 27th - 29th. St. Pete (APBA) will have a race also.

High-speed boat race on FMB is canceled

The Fort Myers Beach Offshore Grand Prix — Southwest Florida's only offshore powerboat race event — has been canceled for 2004 because of a lack of funds.
The race would have marked its 11th year at Fort Myers Beach this May had board members of the non-profit that run it not voted Monday to call off the event.
The group usually raises $210,000 for the races, which always are between Mother's Day weekend and Memorial Day weekend. But a deficit of $50,000 prompted Monday's vote.
Last year's race attracted the smallest powerboat fleet in the event's history. Also, the 2003 races were sized down from the usual two-day event into one day of boat racing.
