Gas Prices

Will these prices keep you from boating as much as you want ?

Downtown42 05-09-2004 12:32 PM

no. I may just float more or at the docks/bars

Saleen367 05-09-2004 12:38 PM

May have to limit the number of river runs we go on. More floating at the lake and coves instead.

Dave M 05-09-2004 12:41 PM

I can cruise all day at 50 MPH only burning about 10 GPH. Gas prices might deter me from engine mods that increase consumption and run high octane gas.

you get 5mi/gal ??

Dave M 05-09-2004 12:53 PM

Yes, I keep track of hours and gallons everytime I fill up. My boat has a '7 beam and is relatively light for a 24. Plus I have a stock MPI engine. It may sound hard to believe but it is true. I once went 160 miles according to my GPS on 55 gallons.

Downtown42 05-09-2004 12:55 PM

wow

LostinBoston 05-09-2004 01:26 PM

5 mpg, thats awesome. i think i get about 1. my dads boat gets 1/3 mpg. or 3 gallons per mile. I knew what i was getting into though with boats and just add it to the monthly expense.

The question is will it keep you from boating as much as you want to ?? Oh wait....my fault....you don't even own a boat to put gas in.

tripps 05-09-2004 02:06 PM

Im still goin out, last year i got 100 gallon's for 1.80 a gallon, even if its 2.10 a gallon im not gonna sayt home for 30.00 $ Plus that 100 gallons lasts me 3 weeks    tripps

cuda 05-09-2004 02:58 PM

Let's just say if it gets any higher, the Minx will see more use this summer than the Formula.

Downtown42 05-09-2004 03:17 PM

1000 gal is 300. extra screwing for the yr.

Gas may come down before election, July-Aug?

otis311 05-09-2004 03:32 PM

It might alter some long range boating but I look at it this way, If Im burning gas Im using my boat which in turn means Im enjoying myself, and the more Im enjoying myself ,the better off I am. Just going to cost more this year

Downtown42 05-09-2004 04:02 PM

I doubt you and GLH with new Tigers are gonna let them sit too much

Hey Dave according to my calc thats 2.90909 mpg :o :D

The fact that it's 2+ gal might make me looks at options I've never bothered to IE ....
- Buying street gas and trucking it home.
- Investing in a few hunge gal tank at the house.
- Purchasing fuel with a Citi CC which offers 5% cash back up to $5000 in gasoline purchases. That equals $250 back in my pocket.

But it will not "keep me from boating as much as I want" Now if it hits $3 or ...... ?? :( it might. I don't have endless pockets. Question is what can we do about it?? RECORD profits reported at these companies and prices are still rising .05 / .10 a week ... UNfriggenREAL!

Donzi Corleone 05-09-2004 05:31 PM

Im trailering the boat closer to ramps in the area I want to boat rather then running the 30 miles across Tpa Bay to get there. The wife overruled me this week and said she would rather spend an extra hour on the boat then in the truck. No problem here,I said. The weather was gorgeous though and that played a big part in her decision

McGary911 05-09-2004 05:42 PM

I'm not thrilled at the prices, but lack of free time is the thing that keeps me off the water. If i could boat at will, then the gas $$ thing might make me think, but if i can get out once every 3 weeks, i'll be glad to spend the $$

jtmiller02 05-09-2004 06:19 PM

Don't let Too Old vote, we all know his idea of boating doesn't involve gas or water :D :D :D

That is correct. My GPH figures are averages. My average is in fact 10 GPH over about 350 hours. If I recall on that trip I was traveling faster than average for most of the 160 miles. I spend most of my time at about 3500 rpm which will give me about 50 MPH. I think the gas consumtion goes up exponentialy beyond 3500 rpms.

Could Effect Long Trips

I may cut back on on long runs, but will not stop boating.

buck183 05-09-2004 08:03 PM

An average day of boating for us is $20-$40 in gas. Prices won't affect my boating no more gas than I use in a day.

I am gonna complain about prices though. Won't be happy until they get down where they need to be. Ridiculous IMO.

Diesel is the way to go. My 37 AT would get 1 to 1.25 MPG while cruising. It had 500 EFI's. New boat (maybe) gets the same, weighs twice as much has two state rooms, two heads, 6'7" headroom and a garage for a waverunner:D

Fuel prices will not keep me off the water:) :)

VT32SSR 05-09-2004 08:10 PM

Gas prices dont play much of a role, when summer is three months long.Winters are long here in Vermont. Were out as much as possible, once the water warms up.........

CHEAP FUN.....

Fine but it won't go as fast

It's true. Top speed is 40 mph.

Spectre Man 05-09-2004 08:54 PM

My fiend just picked up a gorgeous 43' Nortech with 875 K.E.s last week. This boat is an ocean liner, but it is truly one hell of a boat. Heloves the boat s much, he can't stop driving it. He said he filled it up on Tuesday. That's 300 gallons folks..... and he drove it as much as he could and had to fill it up on again on Friday. He drove it all day Saturday and Sunday (up and down the lake and down and up the lake over and over) and said he will probably have to fill it up on Monday. Holy Sh*t Batman!

CAP071 05-09-2004 10:16 PM

When you can afford a 43' Nortech I don't think ANY gas price would bother you :D

Griff 05-10-2004 12:02 AM

I doubt it''ll have any effect on actual boating time. I'll just be using more 4 letter words as I'm at the pump filling it.

Not to mention, a couple of my regular passengers always kick in nicely for fuel. Its never required, but always appreciated.

Same here, we only get a few months of boating so the prices won't stop me from going out every chance i get plus everyone usually pitches in:)

toolman 05-10-2004 06:38 AM

Would a boycott against Exxon/Mobil help at all? I am a stockholder but these prices are getting crazy!!! Plus I don't plan on selling that stock anytime soon anyway.

There must be something we can do to stop these oil companies from gouging us like this!

PS I usually buy my gas at the local no-name gas stations anyway.

JC 05-10-2004 06:50 AM

I have about $1200.00 of premium contracted from last year at $1.62 a gal. I am hoping that will buy me some time before a price drop?

Cigaretteman 05-10-2004 07:33 AM

Just to make you guys feel better the price for one gallon is close to 5.5 $ over here !!!!

The morning news said this is just the beginning expect 3 bucks accross the country..

Wellby 05-10-2004 09:07 AM

At $2 a gallon... I'll buy cheaper beer. At $3 a gallon... I'm going to walmart and buy paddles for the crew!! :D

Gas could go to 3 bucks but I would not bet on it.

Watch the value of the dollar versus the Euro to determine the price of oil. Oil is the major commodity that is dollar based world wide. Let me give you an example:

When oil was at $25 the Euro was 1.20 vs the $ OPEC could buy $30 worth of goods and services in Europe.

When oil was $35 and it took $1.20 to buy a Euro OPEC was only able to buy $28 worth of goods and services in Europe.

We are now seeing the US dollar rally vs the Euro and with the election ahead it may be wise to have the US dollar strengthen further, thus allowing OPEC to reduce the cost of a barrel of oil. This may all be too late to have much effect on summer boating but should put a cap on prices before too long.

As I write, the price of oil on the futures market is down $1.50.

****the value of the dollar is not the only factor in the price of oil.

This just about sums it up....

fund razor 05-10-2004 01:37 PM

This is a good thread for that sheet on which gas stations buy their oil from which countries.

It went around after 9/11. The idea was to get people to buy less Saudi gas I think.

Maybe if somebody is getting rich off of me I should decide which country the money's going to?

I'll look for that sheet. Maybe somebody else will post it inthe meantime.

robyw1 05-10-2004 03:48 PM

I will just fill mine up on the trailer more often rather than the marina. It should all even out then.

I will do less Poker Runs, but I will be on the lake every sunny weekend.

You don't burn any gas with the key "off" in Devil's Cove.
