Are OSO Old Timers Leaving?

I don't know if anybody else has noticed this, but it seems like there's a changing of the guard with OSO members. Yes we're almost at 20,000 members and adding new ones every day, but some of the old timers just seem to be fading away...

Even Too Old doesn't post as much, but I'm sure the new business is keeping him hopping.
I know there are many more, but my feeble memory doesn't want to remember right now. Has the board become too big, too many non-boating related issues, too much bickering?

Indy,, I have definitely noticed this also... I Think a lot of guys got fed up with certain aspects of this site.. I see a bunch of old timers from this board actively participating in two or three other popular boads, and don't hardly ever see them here anymore..

Wally... dont see him around anymore,, he was very knowledgeable and always helpful..

Too much controversy. I know some industry professionals stay away because of the bashers and negative publicity.

Steve !!!

Thanks for noticing !

No gripes or issues other than I'm working my ass off - need extra money ( $3+ / gallon who knows ?? ) to feed those two hungry motors I have now !!

We need to get you and Diane down to the Island this year and spend the day on the boat with all of us.

We have a new house in Westhampton that you're always welcome at.

Shorgasm, Allan4 and I all ran away to Kalamazoo, MI and are now Elvis groupies :D:D:D

There are more boards to see now than there used to be, so I try to look at all of them. The OSO "attitude" has changed, and I'm admittedly not enjoying it as much. I usually just stop by, read content that I want to see, and leave. Plus, we've been remodelling a house for 6 months, so I haven't had a lot of time to surf. We're hoping to be done soon to go boating!

I'm surprised anyone even noticed:D Lots of new members.

Re: Are OSO Old Timers Leaving?

Having been on the board for quite a while now, the attitude has definately changed. There seems to be not as much about boating as there is about personal airing of laundry.

I also think there's a shift in internet usage overall. It's not so much a novelty anymore and folks have realized that any hack can be a self proclaimed expert on any subject he chooses to be. The credibility of message boards is at an all time low. With more and more participants, it will only get lower.

Re: Are OSO Old Timers Leaving?

I maintain my friendship and commuinication with Uncle Toys. he has not been arouns as much for many reasons stated above. As is always the case, when you have alot more people involved, you get many more varying opinions. As such, differences arise that some people handle well and others do not. This has resulted in some members becoming disenchanted with the board. It is truly unfortunate, but certainly the "fault" of no one. It is merely a function of the evolution of OSO.

i am still here...AND i don't mind the controversy either :D ....i have learned that sometimes you just can't win in here...but, i am always watching...i have really met some good people (in person) over the years though my affiliation with OSO...i look forward to seeing the people i know in the pits this year and welcome the ones that have not had the chance to hang out with us yet.

Re: Are OSO Old Timers Leaving?

I know quite a few that have left based on the membership fee alone. Nobody I know has found another message board that charges a fee. Therefore, people will tend to look elsewhere. This site is still the biggest, best and has the most knowledge. I only pay the fee because I feel that the knowledge and friendship that this site has provided me is worth the tiny bit of money that I have to pay. I have tried to convey this to others but the point often falls on deaf ears. Oh well, sh^t happens!

Wes has to be around he owns a resin bucket and has to feed it. Besides when I met him he didn't give me the impression of anyone that gets bent out of shape for anything or anyone. A philosophy I try to adhere too also.

I agree, the information here is well worth the price of the top membership, but I can't see the annual fee driving people away. I mean for the pics alone it is worth the money. I don't know what is driving them away. Perhaps OSO should offer these distinguished members a 30-day trial subscription w/ full permissions and see if they want to come back?

This is definitely a valid point. There are so many threads that are not boat related in General Discussion, that it isn't appealing. The problem is when we try to clean it up and have only boating related issues, people throw a fit.

Let them throw a fit, clean it up anyway.. There is an off-topic section just for this. $$-up and be a part of it

I left for a couple of days and now find my membership's gone!?!? Hmmm???

My biggest complaint (and reason for staying away) on this board is the "clicks" and "group think" are out of control... eg: mention Apache or a person associated with the name.

Overall OSO does a great job given the task at hand... even the new look is starting to grow on me.

I believe many members are still here but not as active. Some have changed their names and its hard to remember them all. There is a lot of good information on this site for the most part.Sure there is a lot of BS but it can be entertaining at times.

Re: Are OSO Old Timers Leaving?

Your going to get BS on any site you go to. I cant say that I have found any site where somebody or something wasnt complaining or being complained about. But this site is still one of the best if not the best that I have found for good information about offshore boats. As far as memberships, I think many old timers may still be lurking. But, its natural for the composition of the board to change over time. New members, new trends and so forth.

I've commented on this topic MANY times in the past few months. We have an Off Topic section for a reason.....let's use it for that. It's not a Current Affairs section like some still think it is. There hasn't been any arguing in there since Troutly took it over that I can remember.

It's simple to me, if the subject is not boating related just put it in OT. No bid deal.

Some threads get moved there to try and hint to the starter where it should go. Seems to me that some still aren't taking a hint.

I'm done griping. By the way, I still like my OSO and the people in it just the way it is. :D

Re: Are OSO Old Timers Leaving?

I'm new. So I have no idea what I missed when all the old timers were still here.

I can tell you that I have gotten some great advice in the Tech section, and have tried to give some when I have already overcome a problem somebody else is having.
I am also kind of surprised at some of the threads in general boating. Maybe it should be called "boating." Maybe the "general" is throwing people off.

Now, I don't want to make anybody mad, but....
I'm not a racer. I stay the hell out of the racer's milling area. My boat is so slow compared to some of you guys/gals that I would have to start on a poker run the weekend before you just to arrive the same day.
I will never be a racer. I still however, enjoy following the sport as the drivers and especially crews continue to push the envelope.

It has been said that some of the posts on this site have or will discredit the OSO membership in the racing community.
Maybe I don't understand about the racing community, but what the hell does a website have to do with someone's reputation as a racer?
Isn't this kind of respect earned on the water and in the shop?

If somebody posts a lame thread, isn't that a bad reflection on them?

I can't imagine how the respect that one person has earned on the course over a long time can be so easily eroded by a lame post by someone else.

Let me put it this way, if my next door neighbor paints his house pink, it will annoy me. However, it will not signify to the world that I had anything to do with it.
Nor does it mean that everybody on our street likes pink.

The knobs will naturally fall away, and the people who know what they are talking about will continue to educate, impress, amaze, and entertain us.
I think that's why the Tech section rules so much. It's the home of the true boating spirit on this board. And it's where you will find a lot of "old-timers."

I'm sure glad.... because they have helped me out tons.
