Hi. 10 Annual Oshkosh Thunder Run is next weekend. June 11,12,13. Several Hammond IN Boats are going including us, "Mr. Cig" Quiet Storm, Life is Good, Donzi38 and Donzigirl to name a few. www.oshkoshthunder.com for details. It's a really nice run. I have made it twice and would do it again this year, but I'm broke(n). Just be sure you have FULL TIME mufflers. Wisconsin does not recognize a switchable muffler. The DNR is very strict on that lake and they will be out in force for the run. The legal limit is 87db. The lake is shallow, but you won't run aground during the run. I mention the depth because the water will get ugly if the wind kicks up. Please be prepared. You'll be impressed with the food spread. They do a really nice lunch and dinner on Saturday. I've never made the Friday party. Usually, people clear out Sunday morning.

Well the noise maybe a problem I have switchable mufflers and with them closed I'm still over 100db. I will play nice and idle on one maybe thay will leave me alone. I didn't realize they were that strict up there.

Cord how long is the run (miles)?
I need to know how much fuel to put in I don't like towing with the tank full.

To much weight. Is there 92 octane on the lake?

Shoot. I was hoping it was a little later Tim. I was going to suggest that Vickie and I go in on it with you and I'd bring the batteries with me then. But not if it's next weekend and your boat is still down. Bummer. :(

Strict is an understatement.....I have never seen so many DNR officers in my life up that way. Might want to check with the organizers to see if they have made any arrangements with the DNR regarding the run otherwise be prepared.

We are going up for the run and will have a few boats for Northpoint Marina going with us. Does anyone know the distance the meter is from the water and the transom when they test you for 87db?

Run is approx 80-90mi total. Performance Marine Rod should sell 92-93 octane. The DNR will talk at drivers meeting. They will tell you where to turn the mufflers on to keep the homeowners happy. I don't think there will be much problem on the run as money goes to local charities.

There will be problems with the DNR. The only way they will leave you alone is if you register the event as a race, if it's a race then your insurance is automatically voided. They came to the last event that I attended and spoke about the noise. Later when the citation was being issued, the officer told me that "I had been warned". They waited for us to go up river and then moved into position trapping all of us. Running on a single will not be good enough, because they will stop you when you are planing. That's when they got me. Being nice and polite gets you nowhere.

The last time we did the run, we were showing over 100 miles on the gps. There are several points to buy gas, but your best bet is to start with full tanks. Just be carefull. The last couple of legs are dry. I would fill up in Oshkosh before launching.

B3-you must go with the speed. By the time your cruiser got into the port for lunch, people would be leaving. If you can't average 50, then you will be left behind.

As to the DNR leaving you alone because the money is going to charity...remember...during the Milwaukee race, one of the race boats was giving people rides in exchange for donations. The DNR shut down the event because of the noise.

That's actually a pretty good idea, but there is no way I will have the boat ready. I'm still doing yard clean up. I also have a grand opening to attend for a building that I designed. Maybe we could plan on doing that for Smoke? :D

I missed that in Milw. What day was that? I slipped 4nts down there and there was lot's of loud.

DNR up at Oshkosh has gotten uglier the last couple years from what I hear.
I'd like feedback after this next drivers meeting before run on what the DNR states this year.

Never heard your boat Cord, but someone I thought said it was REALLY LOUD!!

DT, yeah Cords boat is loud....but sure sounds SWEET :)

I try and avoid the Winne area because of the harrassment the DNR hands out. Luckily when I am up there I have the kids with me which kinda makes them turn their heads towards someone else. I know some folks that went up last year (non poker run) and they ALL got stopped for noise and ticketed. Once ticketed, the DNR asked where they put in and told them "off the lake" and made sure you left....not a fun day on the water.

B3 (Kurt) hey, nice hearing from ya :). You still have the cruiser with the 383 stroker? hows she running...

rv...they pretty much have a PVC pipe set up that they use as their guide to make sure the distance is right...the ones I have seen are three feet horizontal with a three foot piece downward. They stick the low end at your exhaust and put the db meter at the other end of the pvc to give them the reading.

I lost a critical element when I was proof reading my post. That charity run was on Winnebago and was sponsored by merc.

Yea, my boat isn't quiet. I think it tested at 97db. For the record, my truck idles at 90db. The only way you will pass 87db is with some really good restrictive mufflers or through prop exhaust. Before the test, the DNR will look for silent choice, so don't even think about that.

Thanks HP500efi, I will have to do some measurements, 3ft seems pretty close!

Does Mark Lee have any response from the DNR for this event?

We are planning on going up early on Friday and run around some. Sounds like the DNR hangs in the river area. Any area that they specifically hang around at or are the all over.

One area to turn mufflers on is lake beuttemore (cant remember spelling) when headed to winneconne, you get real close to the shore there by the buoys and homes. I mean like 50' away is where they have buoys set and that shorline is a definate NO NO. People with binoculars will get regisstration and call dnr. All other beutamore running is ok except for that 1 mi area.

Pretty well any place on the river is fair game. They hang by the RR bridge, by Rainbow park, before the highway bridge. The Fox River is totally fair game. The Fox River where it empties into Beut is where they got me. Your run will be on Winnebago. I honestly can't say where the DNR will be out there. I'd expect them to be by the RR bridge to catch people on their way to the Performance Marine card stop or at the Fondu Lac harbor.

Bad attitude Go Fast people.
Come on now, I go to Riversplash with my 390 Express to get shoved off like garbage with OSO members and related Go Fast Boats.
All you people at the Riversplash with Go fast needs a reality CHECK.
Wow, worse than a Blow boater, I felt like unwanted because I can not do 50+ MPH, well, This just disapointed me with people in the Go Fast field.
Also the chicks had a nose in the air to all. :blaster: .
later on in the night, we all had to move down stream for the fireworks, well all of you guys had to show off like you where the only boats on the water, I just about hit by two differant Go Fast boats while trying to clear a Bridge.

From talking to Mark Lee last year I believe he pulls a special permit that exempts the Poker runners from noise restrictions the day of the run.

He can only pull one per year so they are not exempt during the labor day run.

The run this year will not go up the river at all, the performance marine stop has been changed.

You may want to contact Mark through the OshkoshThunder.com website to make sure that I'm correct.

What happened? I saw a big raft off at Pere Marquette park by the water fountains in the water Sat. Blk Thunder, 42 Lightning, Eliminator with some big motors(guy looks like Willie Nelson in all black clothing) Who did you notice from OSO??

Yeah, the willie nelson guy was accross the river from my Sea Ray.
he had like 900 sc in the pickle fork. It was the group in front of him 6 deap from pier. Engine cover open on the 42. That crew was Uncooth. I thought the end boat was an OSOer. maybe incorrect. Butt, Butt attitude.

I just got back again from river splash, park in the same place, saw many beutifull women in skirts, just my kinda outfit perfered for Women.

Downtown, oh yeah. I was planning on cruiser my 390 up there to stay for the weekend, but my employee reguested that weekend off today. I will find out on monday night if i still can cruise on up to oshkosh or not.

They sell 92 octane right at the marina that holds the event.

I've been in over 20 poker runs and this is one of the best...Great run, great food, and a good friday and saturday party too!

Mark said that he has no permits from the DNR and that we should have mufflers. I do and still wouldn't make it. He has talked to them and hopes that they will leave us alone but could not promise anything.

I have been to this event in the past. The DNR even had a safety talk at the beginning. Many boats were open exhaust. If they pick on this event there will be some very upset boaters, me included. Even with my mufflers I am nowhere near 87 DB. You would need a fishing boat with a little outboard to pass.

Brad I hope you are right.

Just to clarify, I contacted the WI DNR on the noise measurement test.
They typically do the stationary test and it is 86db at 40" from the back of the boat and 48" to 60" above the water.

The drive by test is done at wide open throttle and measured 50'. For officer's safety they do not do that test and if they do it from a dock he said you would be in violation of running to close to a dock.

I have a db meter with both scale I check before hand but I know I'm over.

I did the self test with a db meter 4' up and 3' back. 105db mufflers on...... 110 off. Nobody would pass in typical Poker Run at 87 db. Going up the Wolf River on Sunday I would not recomend. The harrasment is higher up there.
