Pics of 9 in the heel and a plate. Mine are permanant. In there forever. Im not a big guy 5'8" 175lbs. All stainless steel and will set off the airport detectors. The heel (calcaneous) is an odd shaped bone. Once you shatter it , mine was in 5 pieces, you need something to hold it in the correct shape while it heals. The bone will heal fine without the screws but the shape of the bone need to be the same as original to walk normally again. I asked the doc why he couldnt drive the screws any straighter and he said the strap or plate that the screws go through is the correct shape for the bone and the screws need to be in all those angles to hold it together. Once you look at the top view you can see that all the screws are evenly spaced and in there the only way you could get all of them in there.

Modern medicine is simply amazing!

The metal detector at the airports are going to be fun.

They do look like quite a bit of screw sticking out of the bone. I may not be wearing normal shoes for the next 4 months. I'm afraid to look under the bandage now.

Damn Ron, you weren't kidding about the erector set look. Hang in there and you'll be almost good as new before you know it. Once again, if you or D needs help with anything, don't hesitate to call. I've got a lot of spare time now.
