Sailboat Story!

For all the *****ing they do about us.
So last weekend I am out on my boat entertaining a friend and her dog. We anchored up at the 5 points in Newpot Beach (A designated achorage area within the confines of the harbor, all within the 5 mph no wake zone.)
So we are relaxing and talking on the deck of the boat (21 ft) and all the sudden a big (40 ft +) sailboat is coming straight at us (Midship) with sails full and racing about 5 other boats. Let me reiterate for those who might be slow to fallow. Racing in the harbor, in the 5 mph area and through a designated anchorage area.
We both jump up and start yelling at the top of our lungs, so do the other boaters around us. I yell for her to jump off the boat as I dive into the cabin to get her dog (In highnsight I could have never got him off the boat...180lbs rottwieller).
At the last second...and I can honestly say within 7 (Yes 7) feet, this guy turned on a dime and tacked the other way. I was screaming at the captain and expressing my discontent with his safety measures (It basically came out as "Come back here you F^%$en F&%%tard so I can shove my D*&ck in your ear!!!") or something nauticle like that. They guy yells back "Calm down...I saw you".
Oh my God!!! This knucklehead actually did this on purpose. Needless to say I called the harbor patrol and when they where done perving on my little boating buddy, they said "These guys think they own the harbor, we will call the other unit that is closer" and they drove off. So 10 minutes later the freakin guy in the sailboat goes by again. In front of the pack! I guess the cops never said a thing.
NICE!
So I tried the legal route, now onto plan B. If you all read about some dego jumping on a sailboat in mid race and plundering its captain...That would be me. Because the next time I see this guy in the harbor, we are having words. AND, I am planning on putting some APBA, SCOPE, SBA and Pacific Offshore stickers all over the thing while its sitting at the dock.
This is war!!!

That statement couldn't be more true! I can't tell you how many times I've been running in front of the break wall (no speed limit zone) and some sailboater will yell, flip me off, or shoot the air horn off at me. I finally started pulling up next to them and "explaining" to them that they should learn the navigation laws and speed laws of the area before they shoot their mouths off and if they want to "discuss" it any further meet me at the ramp. Upitty muther f*ckers!

That's the advantage of having a sailboat. You can race wide open in a 5 mph zone and not break the law.

Dude, calm down! You have to remember one important fact:

The smarter you are, the more stupid people you have to put up with!

No harm, no foul. Let it go.

Re: Sailboat Story!

I posted this story last year.
The week of the St. Clair River offshore races a friend of mine was drift fishing in the river. A 40' plus sailboat running down river under power ran into his boat. My friend jumped overboard to avoid being hit. The other person aboard was pinned between the bow of the sailboat and the dashboard of the boat. My friend, in the water got the sailboats attention and told them to reverse to free the rammed boat.
One of the offshore race boats was out doing practice runs and they pulled the damaged boat back into the harbor. The sailboat was reluctant to come to shore but was eventualy convinced by the police who were called by the harbor master.
Fortunatly they were not seriously hurt.

Re: Sailboat Story!

I am not one to freak out about "What could have happened". But this was close
38'+ sailboat at full steam vs. a 21 ft powerboat at a direct hit to the side. The worst part is that even if we had jumped (Honestly..we both froze, we should have jumped) we would have still been in this guys way.

Re: Sailboat Story!

He was playin ya, he saw you and knew what he was doing, one thing about sailboaters, they do know their surroundings, they were using you as a mark :D Good thing the others tacked also, tangled rigging can slow you down. It was a stupid move, I have seen it done before. The danger is in someone swimming or another boat alongside, just not responsible and done intentionally to boot. There is a president of someone shooting a boat with a flair gun to warn of a collision, you could have played that . :D Just hit a sail, depending on the material it could be 15K :D :D

next time he pulls that crap unload a flare into his sale. when the sailboat friendly harbor patrol arrives, tell them you feared for your life, "officer. my boat has 150 gallons of fuel, I saved his life too".

BTW - did he reak of b.o., wear a dumb hat and have his testicles hanging out of his shorts? most do.

Re: Sailboat Story!

Not that I agree but most guys that race do know what is going on around their boat. By going a few extra feet on any tack they can gain or loose quite a bit of ground. I have been racing in million dollar boats and seen the rigging going in and out on two boats. Very exciting. What we used to do when we were in areas that stuff like that happend was send some one up on the bow to let anyone know that we saw them.... I can only imagine your wondering if they saw you or not.....

All I can think about however is that part of Austin powers were the guy gets run over by the steam roller :D:D

How about idling in Boston,s inner harbor in a small inlet which is a no wake zone, and have a 35 foot sailboat with sails up coming up behind you yelling for you to speed up?What is wrong with these people?

I love the guy that has his sails all up & his motor running. He put his sails up just so he would have the right of way in a no wake zone. The best is the look they give you when you pass them going slow .
I think the next sailboater we see we should go right for them then running at about 80+ then turn at the last min. just to how they like it.

Sailboaters Suck .

I use the "Trucker in the rear view mirror" theory. If I can see you while I am waiving and screaming... You cant see me. I am buying a flare gun this week and going blowboat hunting!

In hiensight; I should have just thrown the Rottwieler on the sailboat and as THEY scrambled yelled "Dont worry, he's friendly".

I'm pretty new here and I have to tell you... I'm pretty impressed with most everyones capacity for keeping their cool. Most people I know, including myself tend to let their emotions get the best of them.

No question, I would have ripped his effing head off when he stepped foot on the dock. Just the look on his face while he pulled up to tie up with me standing there would have been worth it.I think I need to go call my therapist.

Sailboaters, ahhhhhhh.

You guy's defending this sail boater is ridiculous. He was acting in unsafe manner and endangering peoples lives and property. Lines foul and wind changes. If it truly was 7 feet the guy was not boating safely. I can run my power boat within 7 feet of another boat and turn away without hitting it also, but I would be called an a'hole and given a citation.

Sorry to rant, but defending this guy, or even trying to justify his actions is just plain wrong.

Yes the sail boater was very careless and arrogant.

You know, just a few weeks ago some of our fellow members were berated for doing a flyby at a poker run/race event. There is no difference in the hazards of that and what this moronic WAFI (thanks Wayne) did. No wait, there is a difference, OUR guys said they were wrong and apologized on a public forum. Once more proving that powerboaters are a more stand up group of people. Perhaps at some point, preferably before someone gets hurt, this blow boater will get his head out of his posterior and actually take a look around. Until such time, IDRPSTF, I wish you the best of luck in your stickering! If I were close by, I would gladly voluteer to help.

Re: Sailboat Story!

Wasabe, Here are the postsers I thought we justifying this guys actions; Clay Washington, Mitchstellin and Audofn. Sorry if I misread your posts but saying the guy was "playin ya" and "they know where their boat is" is giving someone who would get that close to an anchored boat in an anchorage too much credit. Turning on a course marker is one thing, turing on a boat is another.

Re: Sailboat Story!

Okay...Im on a mission from God (In best blues Brother voice)
I will be posting a P.O. box within the next week on this thread for all of you to send the largest brightest most obnoxious stickers you can find. Make sure they have something to do with powerboating. No profanity as I do not want little kids in the harbor to be effected. Keep in mind this guys sailboat is all white and about 39-42 feet long. Thats alot of free advertising my friends. You can make up B.S. return addresses (I suggest that you do) so you will not get in trouble for supplying what is soon to be the new design scheme for the captain of the years boat. Please make sure stickers are in vinyl so that they can be pulled off without hurting the gel. I am trying to make a point, not actually ruin a boat! For the record... I am not saying I am going to completely cover this A-holes sailboat with all your fine artwork. That would be illegal. And I am an upstanding citizen (As well as a retired Alter Boy!!)

Anyhow,
I will have that P.O. box up soon and will be sure to post "Day After Pics" for all of you to enjoy.
And if anyone wants to donate a sticker that reads "Safety First, Do not Aim At Powerboats" I would Appreciate it!

Thank you to all.
God Bless!

Re: Sailboat Story!

This has to be the funniest thread I have ever seen!

My Dad has a deep hate for sail boaters (even though we actually owned one at one time). Now I know why. He spent a lot of time in SF Bay, and the Golden Gate. He recently told me some stories about sail boaters turning right in front of him, so he would have to take evasive maneuvers. They would come up right behind him while he was fishing, and then drag the lines with their keel.

He also mentioned the time when two sail boats, the only boats in the entire San Pablo Bay, slammed into each other head on!

Another time, a sail boater tacked, and slammed right into an anchored aircraft carrier. The sail boat had to towed away. No damage to the air craft carrier. :D

Michael
