When I was a teenager I built my first boat, it was an 8' wooden hydroplane with a 25hp Evinrude. I couldn't afford a steering wheel, so my brother and I ducked taped a hockeystick to the cowling. 
Worked great! 
Two years later I moved up to a 13' Checkmate MX-13 with a 6 cyl inline Mercury 85hp. That one came with a steering wheel...
